Detective Inspector Jo Shaw is bored, desk-bound, and absolutely not supposed to answer the phone call that sends her to a body in an empty house. Thrown in at the deep end after an injury that almost killed her, she’s determined to prove she’s fit to work. And while a case full of unclear motives and multiple suspects isn’t quite what the doctor ordered, being back in a relationship with her favorite doctor certainly won’t hurt.
When the investigation takes a chilling turn and the Serious Crime Team struggles to connect the dots, Jo asks Isla Munro to help her follow the slenderest of leads. It’s a lead that will take her away from Moorside’s deprived streets and into the lives of the rich and privileged. But these people will do anything to preserve their own interests, and Jo is putting herself—and those closest to her—directly in their line of fire.

Cari Hunter’s British thrillers usually have a large cast and the narrator Nicola Victoria Vincent gives them distinct voices and brings them all to life. There are many characters in this story who are from various ethnicities, have regional accents, men, women, and children, and her performance is exceptional. She captures all of the emotion, the horror, and the occasional humor in the storyline. Cari Hunter and Nicola Victoria Vincent really make a great team.
“The Stolen Girl” is well plotted sapphic crime fiction with many interrelated parts and the author does such a good job laying out the details and building the foundation for this involved case. There are several victims, suspects, and theories, but she ultimately ties up every single loose end.
The investigation’s information gathering stage is laid out meticulously, but the action scenes are also really well done. There were multiple points which were so page-turnery that I was just as anxious as the characters.
The writing is sharp, detailed, and graphic and the listener viscerally experiences the horrific nature of these crimes. Gritty hard-boiled fiction in another author’s hands could be dreary and uncomfortable to read, but one of the things that makes Cari Hunter’s books stand out for me is that she regularly intersperses the brutality of the crime with the kindness, compassion, and empathy of the characters. This fine balance adds light to a very dark tale. The main protagonists as well as the supporting ones (including workmates, friends, victims and witnesses) are full of humanity and depth.
The first novel in the series, “A Calculated Risk” won the 2024 Lambda Literary Award for best mystery, but I think that this book is even better. “The Stolen Girl” can be read as a standalone (the plot is self contained), but there is a lot of character development from book one so I recommend listening to them in order.
