Publisher's summary

I.L. Peretz, the acknowledged "Father of Yiddish Literature", captured the essence of Eastern European Jewish life. He wrote of the magical quality of kindness, and the bitter fruits of blind faith.

This collection features the classic tales "If Not Higher", "Bontsche Schvayg", and "Three Gifts", a brand new translation of "All for a Pinch of Snuff", and a wonderful essay on this great writer and his times by Harvard Professor Ruth Wisse, author of The Modern Jewish Canon.

Fascinating and Very Worthwhile

Lovely, mystifying, fantastical, emotional, satisfying, perplexing, fabled, baffling, moving, troubling - Peretz’s stories are all of these things.

In our own time of fast and technological and partisan, these stories are so much better and should be appreciated.

Take a break from the machine and the hustle bustle, and treat yourself to these stories.
