About this listen

Michael was in a hurry. He was scrambling up the ladder at Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. law firm with eight hundred lawyers. The money was good and getting better; a partnership was no more than three years away. He was a rising star with no time to waste, no time to stop, no time to toss a few coins into the cups of panhandlers. No time for a conscience.

Then a violent encounter with a homeless man stopped him cold. Michael survived, but his assailant did not. Who was this man? Michael did some digging and learned that his attacker was a mentally ill veteran who’d been in and out of shelters for many years. Then Michael dug a little deeper and found a dirty secret, and the secret involved Drake & Sweeney.

The fast track derailed, the ladder collapsed. Michael bolted the firm and took a top-secret file with him. He landed in the streets, an advocate for the homeless, a street lawyer. And a thief.

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

What listeners say about The Street Lawyer

Highly rated for:

The Street Lawyer By John Grisham Tells The Story Of A Successful Lawyer Whose Life Takes An Unexpected Turn When He Encounters The Harsh Realities Of Homelessness And Poverty. The Narrative Is Praised For Its Thought-provoking Exploration Of Social Issues, Realistic Portrayal Of Characters, And Emotional Impact. However, Some Readers Found The Pacing Slow, The Plot Predictable, And The Tone Overly Preachy At Times. The Book Delves Into Themes Of Homelessness, Social Injustice, The Legal System's Flaws, The Conflict Between Greed And Morality, And Personal Transformation. While Not Considered A Typical Legal Thriller, The Story Aims To Raise Awareness And Provoke Reflection On Societal Problems Often Overlooked.

not Grisham's best, but still Grisham

It's a good solid story and narration. Not the best, but much better than average, and I'm finding it harder to find a book I like.

One of the best by Grisham!

This is Grisham at his best. Fast paced, exhilarating, tense with goose bump moments. Comparable to the Firm, Gray Mountain, the Partner, Time to Kill and the Testament.

Loved it

Started off a little slow but I'm on a road trip so it was easy to stay with it. Became to know the characters and could easily visualize and follow along. Kinda feel like it was a true story.

the street lawyer

I liked the story line. you get plunged in to it from the first paragraph. the story line moves along quite well. I was surprised when it ended. rather abruptly, I thought. but I think I was hoping for a resolution to... (sorry, no spoilers here).
the one criticism I do have is about the production. 6 or 7 times all of a sudden you're listening to the paragraph you just listened to. kind of annoying, but didn't derail me.
good book.

One of my favor

I have listened to this audiobook twice. Very interesting, learned a lot about the homeless. Loved the narrators, had me laughing out loud several times, during the settlement procedures. I would love a F/U to this book. What is happening with Brock, Author, Ruby, etc

From DC

Great story with so much accuracy. Always a fan of the legwork Grisham does to make his books as true to life as possible.
