About this listen

The Time Machine is H.G. Wells' warning of what will befall mankind if capitalism continues to exploit workers for the benefits of the rich. As the Time Traveler theorizes, the working class has been pushed underground for so long that it has evolved into a distinct, nocturnal species. The upper class has remained above ground, and their advanced civilization, stocked with amenities, has turned them into weak, lazy, and dependent creatures. But at some point the underground group—the Morlocks—run out of food and are forced to hunt down the Eloi, which it now breeds like cattle.

Great Story From the Birth of SciFi. Classic.

This story is a wonderful and exciting tale of Adventure. Early science fiction stories rarely stand the test of time as well as this one does. all the projections related to geometry and time travel are not horribly out of place. It is an intriguing to say the least. the narrator for this recording was perfect. I was a little surprised by the first hint of music during one of the chapter transitions but it didn't distract or seem too much out of place. This is one of the best audible downloads that I have ever heard. So glad I took time to revisit this classic! Afterthought: this story is a product of the time in which it was written and is told from the perspective of a white, aristocratic, englishmen scientist of the industrial revolution. Although it lacks in the "hard" scifi genre in how it glosses over the macanics of the machine, it holds together as a cohesive and believable story. The theoretical basis on which the concept of time travel is based hasn't changed much since the days of this story. Enjoy!

Classic Story

Where does The Time Machine rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have loved this book since my childhood, and its still gripping today as the first time I read it. This first person narrative tells us about the time-travelers journey into the future.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Time Traveller, I love the journey he undertakes and his encounters with the future.

Which character – as performed by David McAlistair – was your favorite?

The Time Traveller and the Morlocks.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I love the concept, the thought and the representation of the future humanity

Any additional comments?

The author used the setting to talk about their times, the socio-political, religious, economic and scientific climate. Empirically, we still face many of the problems faced back then. No wonder this is a classic!

Worth the read

So it wasn't what I expected and I didn't love it. I have been ruined by modern time travel novels. But it is short, inexpensive and we have all heard of it... so might as well know what it is about... the fact he could envision it in 1895 is amazing. Quick, fun read with a little political opinion thrown in on side.

Worth a listen

Despite the times in which this was written, Wells' future depicts a cultural divide right out of today's headlines. Is this where mankind is headed?
