About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A dashing Regency romance from the legendary Georgette Heyer, founder of the genre.

Captain John Staple's exploits against Napoleon's armies in the Iberian Peninsula have earned him the nickname 'Crazy Jack' amongst his comrades in the Dragoon Guards - but once the Battle of Waterloo brings the curtain down once and for all on the Napoleonic Wars, the boisterous, adventure-loving captain finds life in peacetime intolerably dull.

When the captain finds himself lost in the Pennines, he takes refuge at an unmanned toll-house. It's there that he encounters a woman of extraordinary qualities - and suddenly, his soldiering days pale away next to the adventure, and the romance of a lifetime....

One of my favorite Heyer

I loved the story….funny, witty, with humor and a mystery to solve. I liked the narrator, lovely work. The most beautiful way to spend time. Thank you !

Heyer at her best!

And brought to life beautifully by Callum Hughes. Loved it! Will search out more books narrated by him.

Wonderful characters, voiced to perfection

Intriguing plot, but the most fun was the superb narration.
Audible books are made or destroyed by poor narration .

revised my opinion on 2nd listen

I enjoyed this a lot more my second read thru. My first listen I thought the narrator didn't do this wonderful book justice, but, having listened to other narrators totally ruin other Heyer books, I can appreciate this narrator far more now.
I think it is bcos I am so familiar with this book (have read many times) that I resented where he missed some of the meaning (even this read thru I was still correcting his use of emphasis in sentences). Now I can recognise how difficult it would be to do true justice to a book if you hadn't read it over and over (which is unrealistic to expect from narrators who do this for a living, no matter how desirable).
I will express thanks that he made a good attempt to do justice to where the author writes in accents. not perfect but neither jarring. so much better than many other attempts (some of them make no effort at all and deadpan their way)
