About this listen

The Trouble with Liam is a powerful psychological thriller set in Ireland and Sheffield. It tells the story of the life of Liam O’Sullivan in all its twisted glory.

It begins with tales of his challenging childhood in Dublin and follows him through the sometimes tragic events which change him into a misogynistic, controlling, ultimately lethal bully living in Sheffield. Liam thought he could do as he pleased...until he was taught otherwise.

Prepare to be shocked in different ways throughout the book. If you’re not a fan of thrillers or hate books containing violence, sex, and swearing, please avoid The Trouble with Liam. If you enjoy lashings of dark humor, situations to make your eyes pop out of your head, thrills of every kind, all wrapped up in a gripping, dramatic storyline, please listen.

Great Narration

The narration of this story was EXCELLENT.

This book came with all kinds of warnings about violence, swearing, etc. and although the tale of child abuse and exploitation within what would be foster care in the US is always disturbing I would have really been invested IF every SINGLE ABUSE wasn’t revisited SEVEN TIMES. The storyline and background are repeated so often that I thought it was psychology course lesson plan where you are instructed to repeat yourself 7 times to make your point.
I thought the storyline was good, scary and believable in the saddest way. Yet I understood the first time I read Liam was abused by his mother, the second was also understandable, the third time I was thinking is there more to this we’re about to learn?

There isn’t.

The misogyny and his abusive behavior was not surprising or psychologically thrilling.

I liked it! This book is very graphic and will keep you in suspense. The narration was great and kept me entertained. The author did a great job with the character builds and plot. This was my first book by this author but and I look forward to reading more of her books. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Dark but I loved it!

Liam was unloved, mistreated, and misunderstood. He became a less than stellar member of society. HIs life, from childhood to adulthood, was a very uncomfortable listen. In the beginning, your heart just aches for him. The story is told from Liam's point of view so his questions, his fears, and his desires are known right away. You feel for him and his mistreatment. Then Liam becomes an adult and being inside his head and knowing his desires is just scary.

My hat goes off to the narrator though!!! Norman was exceptional!! He takes you into a frightened young boys world and then into a frightening older man's world. Each one compelling and revealing and disturbing.

This was not an easy listen. It was very, very, very dark but well-written and incredibly well-narrated.

Got what he deserved

This book was more than I expected. Lots of details about Liam’s life and how he became the way he was. All that horrible things he did to women I never thought he would get the same treatment in the end. Such karma couldn’t have been better. But that nurse went further than I expected.

The Trouble with Liam

This is a tale of a poor unfortunate boy who lives through so much terror as a small child and then ends up in foster care. The people who are supposed to care the most about him are the ones who hurt him the most. As Liam grows up his hatred for women only grows stronger and each new travesty in his life makes him more dangerous. Soon he is on a rampage to right the wrongs that he has suffered and goes about it in his own special way. Liam grows into a mean and hateful man that takes what he wants and leaves no prisoners, but one fateful mistake and his hatred of his mother may end up bringing this monster down. Liam’s story is an interesting listen. Each time you think he just might find a ray of hope it is dashed and the evil continues. The book does have its slow parts but as a whole is an engaging story. We watch as an innocent child turns into a horrible and scary man who prays on women. Narrator Tracey Norman does a good job of keeping the narrative flowing and keeping the reader engaged in the story.

3 plus

If you enjoy some tongue in cheek play with your mystery detective author you will appreciate this book. I did get a bit worn out with the Thug apologia but by book's end I was lovin' it. Good writin', good readin', good winter
choice.
