About this listen

First in the medieval whodunnit series set in Bampton, Oxfordshire, during the plague years and featuring a newly qualified surgeon

Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford.

A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

From there the tale unfolds, with graphic medical procedures, droll medieval wit, misdirection, ambition, romantic distractions, and a consistent underlying Christian compassion.

If you love Brother Cadfael, you'll love this!

As I listened to this book, I looked up the names, places and history of the book's setting. All were historically accurate, which made the story even more fascinating. I'm rather fond of historical novels and mysteries and this series has has me hooked!

I liked it

Romance and adventure with Lord's and Ladies. Throw in a murder or two minus someone who wasn't murdered and you find an entertaining story, worth your time for something easy.

an enjoyable mystery pleasantly read

I will seek out other books by this author and also by the reader. I loved this book, told like a story for an adult, enchanting and yet so real, I feel I know the main character and as much as he knows about the other characters as he relates his tale. I want to know more about him and how he sees the world and copes with it. He doesn't leave you with unsolved bits; definitely my kind of book.

Absolutely loved it!!!

This was truly a fun listen! I read some of the reviews and think those who reviewed negatively are treating this as a historical account, which it is certainly not. The wit, humor, mystery and unrequited romance are all in good taste and well-balanced. I believe it is exactly as it was meant to be and it has been a positive surprise that the performance by Steven Crosby was on point for the entire ride and took nothing away from Mel Starr’s excellent work. I will continue this series and hope there are many more adventures from Master Hughes de Singleton in the years to come. 💜

Great Book

Steven Crossley is one of the best and was chosen well for this book. This was a complete story with a lot of interesting historical details and a little bit if everything that really worked for me. I look forward to the next in series.

Decent mystery, even if narrator sometimes forgot to shift voice between characters.

All in all, the book is a decent mystery, The narrator sometimes forgot to shift voice between characters, but performed well enough. I haven't decided if I'll read the next boo in the series yet.
