About this listen

LAPD Detective Renée Ballard tracks a serial rapist whose trail has gone cold, and enlists a new volunteer to the Open-Unsolved Unit: Patrol Officer Maddie Bosch, Harry’s daughter.

Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles.

Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen—a theft she can’t report without giving her enemies in the department ammunition to end her career as a detective. She works the burglary alone, but her mission draws her into unexpected danger. With no choice but to go outside the department for help, she knocks on the door of Harry Bosch.

At the same time, Ballard takes on a new volunteer to the cold case unit: Bosch’s daughter Maddie, now a patrol officer. But Maddie has an ulterior motive for getting access to the city’s library of lost souls—a case that may be the most iconic in the city’s history. Complex, satisfying, and full of dexterous twists, The Waiting demonstrates once more that “you can’t do better than Michael Connelly” (Forbes).

good, but

renee is not my favorite Michael Connelly character. however, she has a little less chip on her shoulder than in previous stories. not much harry in this story. a little too much political opinion, really wish authors would stay away from political opinion

Best of the best!

10/17/24 The realism and evolution of the well known characters that I love makes me more invested in this excellent novel! Makes this one the best of the best in all aspects.
One plot that I loved is letting the sleuthing Bosch do what he does best and not dwelling on him being ill. Because I was so heartbroken in Desert Star, where it seemed Connelly was preparing us for Bosch’s imminent death at the end I was so happy to see he is alive and able to do his stuff. He is the anchor for Renee and Maddie. The conclusion of this novel was one of happiness and hope, with Renee finally going to meet up with her mother and Maddie getting a push in her career goals! The future looks hopeful for more and more from Michael Connelly and his beloved characters. Thank you so much!

11/5/24 I’m just adding on to my initial review after my second listen. My ratings of excellence still remain unchanged although Ive been made aware of one thing after the second read. And that is that I’m not hearing Bosch in the first person in this book. What I mean is I don’t hear his thoughts and motivations for the actions that he takes as much as getting Renee’s thoughts and emotions throughout the book. Bosch has always been the main protagonist and I’m just finding it kind of strange. Does it mean that Michael Connolly is phasing Bosch out of his future stories? It makes me depressed thinking about that possibility actually. I’d like to hear other people’s thought on this.

Too much politics

I loved the story. I think Ballard has gotten beyond control. She has become a bully and unlike a police officer she pays no attention to orders just runs like a bull in a China shop, thereby putting everyone else at risk. I’m not sure as a character what she’s trying to prove but it’s too much
I don’t like her character. I probably will not read any more Ballard books. If they’re written I do love however Harry Bosch, I do hope something comes out with just him and maybe Madeline that would be nice.

Surprises at the end

Always wait too long for Connelly books, and when they finally come, everything else stops. And he never disappoints.
