About this listen

When Ned Giles is orphaned as a teenager, he heads West, hoping to leave his troubles behind by joining the 1932 Great Apache Expedition on their search for the young son of a wealthy Mexican landowner who was kidnapped by wild Apaches. But the expedition's goal becomes compromised when they encounter a wild Apache girl in a Mexican jail cell, victim of a Mexican massacre of her tribe that has left her orphaned and unwilling to eat or speak. Ned's growing feelings for the troubled girl soon force him to choose allegiances and make a decision that will haunt him forever.

Based on historical fact, Jim Fergus takes listeners on a journey of magnificent sweep and heartbreaking consequence.

Awesome

The story was close to my heart growing up in that country. The characters were vivid and their struggles were easy to identify with. it was a pleasure to listen to.

Great story! Even if you don't love westerns.

I don't usually read westerns, but I took a chance on this story. It was a wonderful story that explored the human motivations behind violence between peoples. Told as a series of journal entries from the perspective of a young man striking out on his own for the first time, it was a delightful story of unexpected love, adventure and loss. It brought to light the plight of a people that is easily overlooked in our whitewashed history and took them from legend to relatable. Overall a great story

Fascinating historical novel

To imagine a world still existed in 1931 is hard to imagine. Wonderfully written and beautiful read. With a great storyline.

Wondering!

I enjoyed the book very much. It was a serious subject, but it was written with some humor. I didn’t realize that there were wild natives still existing and trying to live as they had in early America.
However, the ending left me wondering if it had all been a dream. I hope not.
