Publisher's summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Winter War, then pay attention....

In December 1940, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill made a speech about a conflict that had some leading figures in Britain and France, including Churchill himself, briefly discussing the idea of going to war with the Soviet Union, even though they were already fighting Adolf Hitler.

Of course, war makes strange bedfellows, and one year later, Churchill would find himself allied with the Soviet Union against Germany and Finland. It’s an interesting saga, one with roots in imperial Russian history and the desire of the Finns to be free in their northern forests.

In The Winter War: A Captivating Guide to the Russo-Finnish War between Finland and the Soviet Union, you will discover topics such as

  • The Grand Duchy of Finland
  • The Finnish Civil War
  • Between a rock and a hard place
  • The Red Menace
  • Negotiations, “refresher training,” and the balance of forces
  • The Greatest Finn of all time
  • Hell in the snow
  • And much, much more!

Hot War ...

I found the audible to be an easy, engaging listen, which is a relative rarity for a serious military history audible. There are other fine works out there on the Russo-Finnish Winter War, but if you can have only one, buy this audible. Highly recommended.

Fresh Light on Finland's Heroic Stand

This was a very well written scholarly audible. It wasn't dry as some history audibles are but it is very detailed and you have to follow along if you want to get a grasp on this short but very active war within the greater World War 2 era.

A truly great addition

Of the thousands (literally!!) of "War Audibles," I have listened in my 65 years this work would be in the top 5. this author's research, analysis, and use of sources are superb. That basis is further enhanced by a writing style that conveys the flow of events as well as the complex and sometimes bizarre personalities involved in this war which never should have happened.

Listen it!

This is a great little audible which is very well written and presented. It wants for very little and gives the listener all the information they need to form an effective, factual, picture of what the winter war was actually like.

Excellent!

A brilliant accounting of this little known war within a war, pitting a tiny country against a behemoth. The battles are brutal, the weather is brutal. Trotter describes it all magnificently. A must-listen for any WWII history buff. And a must-listen for anyone willing to serve their country, whatever country.

Excellent

I cannot put this audible down - started yesterday morning, it has just gone midnight & I'm going to stay up to finish it. I've never listened to anything about military history before, but this is written, easy to listen without jargon, sometimes with humorous anecdotes.

I devoured this audible...

There's nothing quite like this story. This is exactly what this audible is. Although the author gives a fair point of view from the Russian side, he writes of the Finns' battles and bravery with great eloquence.
