USA Today best-selling author Vivienne Lorret continues the Mating Habits of Scoundrels series with a debutante who believes she is destined to marry the lord next door until a fateful encounter with a rogue makes her wonder...if she might be falling for the wrong marquess!

The wrong place....

Elodie Parrish can feel spinsterhood breathing down her neck. That’s the trouble with waiting for the marquess next door her entire life. But Ellie knows if she gives him one last Season, he’ll finally propose. The only problem is, her path keeps crossing with the arrogant Lord Hullworth, who is convinced she has designs on him.

The wrong time....

Brandon, Marquess of Hullworth, never wanted to be “London’s Most Elusive Bachelor”, or have a horde of hopeful debutantes and their scheming mamas follow him around. His past has left him too jaded to consider marrying any of them. At least, that’s what he thinks...until he meets Ellie. She’s quirky, opinionated, blushes easily, and drives him absolutely wild. The only problem is, she believes she’s in love with someone else.

Ellie never imagined that one sultry summer could change everything. But the more time she spends with Brandon researching her book on the mating habits of scoundrels, the more she starts to fall for....

Great continuity on the series

Love the series, but in this book, I was disappointed on the change of heart of Ellie after the balloon incident, it made no sense to me. Also, nothing was done regarding George; Ellie’s stand was weak.

Amazing characters

The character development is wonderful. The narration-divine and the enemies to lovers trope is so well executed. You’ll love this, if you love this tripe. Bravo!

Enjoyable and well performed 3rd book

As usually, Justine Eyre does a fantastic job in narrating. Enjoyable read with a few twists and turns. Sets the reader up nicely for the fourth book. Overall well written and narrated.

Just Awesome!

The opening/prologue of this book was the best I've read/heard in a very long time. I was enamored of the heroine and was rooting for her from then on. The hero was equally interesting and loveable once we understood how he came to be who he came to be. The writing was witty and thoughtful. I haven't laughed out loud so much while reading/listening to a book in quite some time. Can't wait to read the rest of Lorret's work!

Pleasantly Surprised!

This is a new author for me. I'm a big fan of historical romance novels. Jude Deveraux, Lisa Kleypas, Johanna Lindsay (whom I just learned passed away in 2019. Such a shock! I will miss her books. Rest in peace, Johanna) 😢💞 Stephanie Laurens, Lynsay Sands, Julie Garwood, Sarah MacLean ... these authors are all on my list! Now I can add Vivienne Lorret to it! I'm going to get the next book in this series. Quick FYI - Reading them out of order doesn't affect the story lines.
I truly like a story that has historical accuracy. A good story!! Not a story with lackluster characters that have no depth or background and a horrible premise .. thinking because there are several sex scenes in the book, they get to call it "romance". No! And definitely not a story that is long-winded with too much detail, the story gets lost in the monotony and you get bored! This is not one of those books! And the narrator definitely counts!! You may have a great book but a crummy narrator. (isn't that the worst?!)
Anyyay, I hope this review helps!

An Honest Review for Literary Theory Enthusiasts

Spoiler Alert
Umm, I guess I enjoy stories that have themes that push against social norms and question social rules and society. For those of you who are similar to me, I don't think this book is for you. My review has nothing to do with Justine Eyre's performance, she was good, but the story itself.
The Wrong Marquess moves slowly and was too predictable for me. It took a long time for George's affair with Prue to come to light even though readers and other characters suspected it for a while. It also took a long time for Elodie and Marcus to come to grips about their relationship. For most of the book, I wondered why they did not get together; there was no real reason. The not so good relationship between Elodie and George was not good enough for me. George was too unreliable and too much of a playboy for her to hold onto. It is clear that there is no real attachment.
Stories where true close friends engage in romantic trysts, affairs, and relationships with a friend's current romantic interest and a previous romantic interest often read as doing too much to create conflict. I can understand a fake friend doing so, but not a real friend. Prue was shady for even allowing George to touch her; readers are supposed to feel bad for her, but in reality, she is not a real friend.
Elodie's reasoning for choosing George over Marcus was not good enough. She was scared of losing someone she loves; even though this is a good reason for a novel, it was not very well built up to. I would've believed it more if she lost more than one person she loved. Elodie is too perfect of a character; her only flaw is her naivete. This makes the story feel superficial, and no one is that oblivious. George is obvious and her relationship with Marcus is obvious.
A lot of the dialogue is cliche and corny. The relationship building was good ideas, but would've been helpful if those moments took place throughout the novel and not just the second half when they're already in love. It made the romance unbelievable. Those moments could've been stronger too.
Adding more and stronger themes related to Feminism or social issues would've helped this book tremendously.
