Critic reviews

"There are so many remarkable things about They Dared Return one barely knows where to begin.... [It] compares easily to the most engaging thrillers you might care to read, but the fact that none of this is fiction makes the story all the more compelling. A compelling and thought-provoking book.” (January magazine)
"Armed with research in the National Archives, confidential documents and personal interviews, O'Donnell tells a heart-stopping tale of sabotage by men and women who placed everything on the line against a seemingly unstoppable tyranny." (Publishers Weekly)

Great story, terrible narrator.

There's something about the tone and inflection of this narrator's voice that really made this one hard to listen to, it just does not match this type of story. I finished it because I was really interested in the story, but the narration made it difficult.

Excellent book

This is a true story about courage, determination, and amazing accomplishments of few young people who risked everything to save other people. The book is read well and kept me in suspense from the first chapter to the last. I listened to it while driving from Tampa to Miami. It made the trip so much easier. it taught me a chapter of Jewish history I didn't know. This was the first time that I heard about Jews who escaped Europe, join the U.S. army, infiltrated Nazi Germany during WWII as American spies, and lived to tell about it. An inspiring book.

Entertaining and colourful stories

This was moderately enjoyable to me only, but perhaps it is a matter of taste. When I read that the author is a 'combat historian', that may be the tip-off. It seemed to go at quite a clip (partly the narrator) and not really give you a real feeling of place or setting or even danger. However, some of the stories are quite funny and the book suggests that to be a successful spy, you have to be a 'hustler', so you can be sure their exploits would amuse.

Interesting listen

I always like true history of what happened during WW2. What these men were able to accomplish should not be lost to time. If you like to hear about the exploits of spy’s operating behind enemy lines, you should like this story.

Love this author but reading poor

I usually don’t write reviews but I love this author. However the reader was awful. Cadence off. Odd emphasis on some words. I got through it but hope yo avoid this reader in the future.
