Publisher's summary

Rose Gardner hates seeing her normally flamboyant best friend Neely Kate struggle with depression. So when Rose stumbles onto a piece of evidence indicating her birth mother might have been involved in a crime, she does the one thing guaranteed to cheer Neely Kate. She convinces her friend to help her solve a mystery. Though their penchant for investigating has gotten them into plenty of pickles in the past, what can go wrong if they’re looking into a case that went cold a quarter of a century ago? But the deeper they dig, the more dirt they unearth.

While she’s busy unraveling the past, Rose must also reprise her role as the Lady in Black as part of her ongoing agreement with the king of the Fenton County underworld. In so doing, she discovers a mysterious enemy is intent on attacking her friends, and her assistant DA boyfriend might be next on the list.

As both situations reach a boiling point, Rose must face the possibility that certain secrets were meant to remain buried and not even her special talent can get her out of every predicament.

Good Story, Dumb Girl

This series is turning sinister for the good. It is no longer a fluffy romance mixed with a murder mystery. My only beef is how dumb Rose's comments can be and how she wants an explanation at the absolute worse times!

The narration is great!

Silly, but fun characters

I like this series. It’s cute. The story is becoming more and more far fetched, but finding out what happens to the characters keeps me coming back.

More Rose, more intrigue, more secrets, and more visions

I love Rose and her quirkiness, her stumbling accidentally into crimes, her naiveté, and her good heartedness. I am starting to yell at bit a Rose while reading these books - do not do that Rose, that’s a bad idea Rose, use your brain Rose. Rose is a 24 year old woman living in a nosy closed minded small town. She experiences visions that she’s compelled to share with the person she has them of. In this story, Rose, of course, finds herself suddenly in the middle of intrigue and danger when she decides finding out more information about her birth mother will help cheer up her friend Neely Kate after her miscarriage. The usual unexpected consequences and unexpected danger follows Rose and Neely Kate while they investigate. Mason, Neely Kate, Jed, and Skeeter are once again major secondary characters in this story. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an engaging storyline with sweet moments, exciting action, danger, family drama, painful pasts, mystery, plot twists, imperfect characters, missteps, and all the big feels. I am looking forward to reading what happens next in Rose’s life. 4.5 stars

Shannon McManus did a great job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

Good cheap trick to sell the next book

After all these books, after all her experiences, you would think that Rose would have wised up a bit.

I thought this book very good and till the end. Really? She went to an abandoned building with a stranger alone? Two, too contrived.

And as for Joe, he is evil. Why would she want to be friends with him? If he doesn't get his in the next book, I will never read anything by this author again. I don't care how awful his childhood was. He does absolutely nothing to change his situation. He just plays into his fathers hands. He has no spine.
