About this listen
Something is in the walls. Something that wants out.
Beth’s life is in shambles. Recently released from jail after a car accident that took the life of a crossing guard, Beth finds herself in the middle of a bitter custody battle with her soon-to-be ex-husband, one that she can’t possibly win given her husband’s legal connections, and her own troubled past. Adding to the turmoil, her mother, who she hasn’t seen or spoken to in years is now in the hospital after falling down the stairs.
Dropping everything to be at her mother’s side, Beth begins to suspect there may be more to this fall than meets the eye. Something is not right in her mother’s house; something that resulted in her taking a tumble down the stairs while struggling to carry a giant bag of kitty litter up into the attic.
Digging up and confronting the past was not Beth’s goal following her release from jail, but her mother’s fall has put her upon this path, one that will change everything she thought she knew about her own childhood while also providing a horrifying solution to all the turmoil that has descended upon her.
Does Beth have the stomach to do what is necessary to end all her troubles and keep custody of her daughter? Or will she simply sit back and watch as her husband’s ruthless legal team continues to take everything from her?

Story
They warned me the first few days of motherhood would be exhausting, but I’m so deliriously happy, I don’t mind one bit. Smiling, I glance at the baby blue blanket I crocheted. I’ve never knitted a thing in my life, but I was determined to make my newborn his very first blanket—a one-of-a-kind welcome-home gift. I tug the rocker closer to me, unable to resist peeking at my beautiful baby boy. I pull back the blanket. It feels like my heart flatlines. He’s not here. Sweat beads on my forehead, and my limbs turn to ice. “Where is he?” I cry, my whole body trembling, the wind knocked out of me.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Story
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Story
When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Story
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

That ending!
I really enjoyed this story. I wasn’t familiar with this author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I also went into the story totally blind. This is more thriller than horror (in my opinion), which was unexpected, but a pleasant surprise. I love horror and thrillers, and this was the perfect blend. I’m planning to check out some of the author’s other books after listening to this one.
Speaking of listening… the narrator, Erin Deward, does a fantastic job! She voices the character’s beautifully without sounding fake or strained. Absolutely loved her performance.
