About this listen
The original 1912 news accounts of the Titanic disaster include the first-hand accounts of survivors as told to reporters who met the ship bringing them from where they were saved from lifeboats. The surviving crew describes the crucial moments after the ship hit the iceberg. A crewman testifies just three days after the sinking that the ship had a fire in its coal bunkers from the time it set sail.

Top crime stories from the Chesapeake Bay Tidewater Region, including accounts of historical murders 100 years ago. One such saga took place in Princess Anne, Maryland, when a mob of 5,000 overran a squad of State Troopers and plucked an accused rapist from jail and lynched him on the lawn next door to the home of the judge who had just made a passionate plea for the mob to go home.

Story
A few minutes before midnight on April 14, 1912, the "unsinkable" RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage to New York, struck an iceberg. Less than three hours later she lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. While the world has remained fascinated by the tragedy, the most amazing drama of those fateful hours was not played out aboard the doomed liner. It took place on the decks of two other ships, one 58 miles distant from the sinking Titanic, the other barely 10 miles away.

Story
On a frigid April night in 1912, the world’s largest—and soon most famous—ocean liner struck an iceberg and slipped beneath the waves. She had scarcely disappeared before her new journey began, a seemingly limitless odyssey through the world’s fixation with her every tragic detail. Plans to find and raise the Titanic began almost immediately. Yet seven decades passed before it was found. Why? And of some three million shipwrecks that litter the ocean floor, why is the world still so fascinated with this one?

The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Story
On November 18, 1958, a 623-foot limestone carrier - caught in one of the most violent storms in Lake Michigan history - broke in two and sank in less than five minutes. Four of the 35-person crew escaped to a small raft, to which they clung in total darkness, braving 30-foot waves and frigid temperatures. As the storm raged on, a search-and-rescue mission hunted for survivors, while the frantic citizens of nearby Rogers City, Michigan, anxiously awaited word of their loved ones' fates.

The Great Lakes have claimed countless thousands of vessels over the course of history, but its biggest and most famous victim was the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, the largest ship of its day to sail the Great Lakes and still the largest to lie below Lake Superior's murky depths. The giant ore freighter was intentionally built "within a foot of the maximum length allowed for passage through the soon-to-be completed Saint Lawrence Seaway."

The giant ore freighter was intentionally built "within a foot of the maximum length allowed for passage through the soon-to-be completed Saint Lawrence Seaway."

At the peak of his power, in the 1940s and 1950s, William Francis Gibbs was considered America's best naval architect. His quest to build the finest, fastest, most beautiful ocean liner of his time, the S.S. United States, was a topic of national fascination. When completed in 1952, the ship was hailed as a technological masterpiece at a time when "made in America" meant the best.

Story
There were few experienced swimmers among over 1,300 Lower East Side residents who boarded the General Slocum on June 15, 1904. It shouldn't have mattered since the steamship was only chartered for a languid excursion from Manhattan to Long Island Sound. But a fire erupted minutes into the trip, forcing hundreds of terrified passengers into the water. By the time the captain found a safe shore for landing, 1,021 had perished. It was New York's deadliest tragedy prior to September 11, 2001.

Story
One of the largest, fastest, and most beautiful ships in the world, the Andrea Doria was en route to New York from Italy. Departing from the United States was the much smaller Stockholm. On the foggy night of July 25, 1956, 53 miles southeast of Nantucket, the Stockholm sliced through the Doria's steel hull. Within minutes, the sea was pouring into the Italian liner. Eleven hours later, she capsized and sank into the ocean.

Story
The men on the SS Marine Electric sailed into a storm in February 1983 not knowing that they would make history - at a great cost in lives. Just three men survived the wreck of the Marine Electric off the shores of Virginia and they found that their struggle had just begun once they got back to shore. Blamed for the wreck, they fought back and broke a code of silence that had covered up sloppy ship inspections for decades and revealed the flaws in old World War II rust buckets that were still at sea long past their functional lifetime.

Story
From the author of The Ghost Ships of Archangel, one of the last unheralded heroic stories of World War II: The U-boat assault off the American coast against the men of the US Merchant Marine who were supplying the European war, and one community’s monumental contribution to that effort. Mathews County, Virginia, is a remote outpost on the Chesapeake Bay with little to offer except unspoiled scenery - but it sent an unusually large concentration of sea captains to fight in World War II.

Story
For fans of sea battles, adventures, and war stories like Unbroken, this is the incredible true story of a boy who helps to bring closure to the survivors of the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis, and helps exonerate the ship's captain 50 years later. Hunter Scott first learned about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis by watching the movie Jaws when he was just 11 years old. This was 50 years after the ship had sunk, throwing more than 1,000 men into shark-infested waters - a long 50 years in which justice still had not been served.

A very interesting perspective on the Titanic.
Where does Titanic 1912: The Original News Reporting of the Sinking of the Titanic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best because it presents great, new information about a topic that I have always been interested in.
Who was your favorite character and why?
A lot of the characters in the whole Titanic story are quite familiar and it is hard to pick a favourite but it was great to learn more details about them.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Some of the stories had very emotional parts that really touched a person and only by reading the original stories do you get that close to the actual story.
Any additional comments?
This is such an interesting perspective on the Titanic story that I have never come across before.

Iceberg did not jump out and attack theTitanic
What made the experience of listening to Titanic 1912: The Original News Reporting of the Sinking of the Titanic the most enjoyable?
Barry Abram's expression as he told the story
What was one of the most memorable moments of Titanic 1912: The Original News Reporting of the Sinking of the Titanic?
I found the fake news reports the most memorable
What about Barry Abrams’s performance did you like?
Again, his expression as he told the story
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The iceberg did not jump out and attack the Titanic!!!
Any additional comments?
As I was rereading Titanic 1912, my husband had the news channel on TV. I irony was not lost on me as I read about the ‘misunderstandings’ in the initial news coverage. Or the errors mixed with the conjured and fabricated news stories. Some things never change! Even armchair quarterbacks still believe the notion that somehow the rich were favored for escaping the sinking ship while the lower classes died. They must have seen the movie instead of reading the lists of those who went down with the ship. As usual, Ken Rossignol went to original sources to garner information for this book. Thank goodness he took H.L. Mencken’s advice that a cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin. Ken looks around and carefully checks out all of the ‘coffins’ he finds. There is a lot of information in this book and I highly recommend it for those whose minds aren’t already made up. The iceberg did not jump out and attack the Titanic!!!

New and Interesting Details of the Titanic
This was an Audiobook that really brings the amount of misinformation and out and out fraudulent articles that occurred in the titanic news coverage.
The narration kept the reporting of these facts interesting and enjoyable. The reports were so varied that the people on shore waiting for their family members were put through the wringer in emotion. The news that there were no deaths and all were rescued was especially cruel knowing now that so many perished.
There have been rumors of cover ups and even people paid to earn a place on the lifeboats. The crew and the passengers were all unequipped for a disaster of this magnitude. The sinking of Titanic caused changes in several different safety regulations. The news media took a terrible accident and created even more sensation. The eyewitness reports were as expected differing and varied, but each were reported with sensationalism that did nothing to help those that had been left widowed or orphaned.
A great book and an even better audiobook. Ken Rossignol has brought an event that happened over one hundred years ago new life. Comparing the different wrecks of the time as well as current ship disasters really allows you to see the similarities in the reporting of these events. If you have an interest in the Titanic then this is not to be missed.

Poor production.
While the subject of this book was of interest to me, I received very little enjoyment listening to it as it was riddled with repeated phrases. It made me wonder whether there might also be skipped phrases or sections. it also begs the question as to whether there are issues with the book itself. I would not recommend getting this version, wait until someone proof reads/listens to it.
