About this listen

The stakes are sky-high when a power-mad Chinese president threatens Taiwan in the #1 New York Times bestselling Jack Ryan series.

For decades, Taiwan has been a thorn in the side of the Chinese government. An independent nation to the rest of the world, it is considered a rogue province by the PRC. Previous governments have tried to conquer the island using economic force and diplomatic pressure, but new Chinese President Li Jian Jun is done fooling around. He’s devised a secret military operation to take the island. Only one man knows how to stop Li’s mad and bloody plan for reunification and that’s Minister of Defense Qin Haiyu. Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, Qin covertly makes contact with the CIA in Beijing and signals his desire to defect to the West.

To get Qin out, John Clark creates an international task force reminiscent of Rainbow Six and goes undercover in mainland China. Meanwhile, Lt. Commander Katie Ryan is deployed to the tip of the spear on the destroyer USS Jason Dunham to defend Taiwan. Threatened by an encircling Chinese armada, she’s under pressure to find a flaw in the invaders’ plan for her father to exploit.

For his part, President Jack Ryan may have the power of the entire US military at his disposal, but what he really needs are Li’s secret plans from Defense Minister Qin so he can stave off a war. Because America’s Defense Protocol could lead to a game of mutual destruction that could cost the lives of thousands of young soldiers, sailors, special operators as well as his daughter.

Great Read during the holiday season Action & Suspense on the world stage.

I have really enjoyed Andrew’s & Wilson’s 2nd book with these characters. Katie’s continued development is great, and I am now just as invested in her as JR. My favorite part of this is the Rainbow version two introduction. I hope in the future we get to see this new version get some new life. I always appreciate that these authors know there military and keep it close to real world scenarios. I really enjoyed this book, I never lost interest at any point. I really appreciated that these authors story flowed so smoothly. I never felt like I needed to jump because things slowed down. The pace kept up and I did not feel like I was lacking information or that they jumped ahead without laying the ground work.

Thank you Andrew’s & Wilson for being such great stewards of these characters and the legacy of this story line!

Good Book, Rushed Ending

Good story and plot, bad ending and epilogue. I will not give any spoilers away, I will simply say the ending wrapped up in about 15 minutes and the epilogue only dealt with two people, there was no closure on some other characters. I enjoyed the book, I just the wish the ending didn't feel like someone just turned off the light.

Great plot

I enjoyed the twists and turns of this plot very much. It was a believable scenario of what could happen when despots reign in our most dangerous enemy countries

Fantastic Follow Up!

These guys are just incredible storytellers, and while I was initially skeptical about them taking on the Jack Ryan universe, especially given how underwhelming many (but not all) of the post-Clancy books have been, Act of Defiance and now Defense Protocol are of the same caliber that made this genre so appealing to so many readers in the first place. Bravo!

Clever plot, except at the end

Liked the engaging plot, but disliked gore the author copped out in the last part of the book by crafting a single solution that magically resolved all of multiple separate plot threads that otherwise could have had interesting resolutions. It’s as if the pages quota had been reached, and so the author brought everything to closure quickly via an unlikely, separate event the story.

Excellent Book

I was always worried when Mr. Clancy no longer penned these books, but this one is outstanding!

Lackluster Ending

Have enjoyed the entire series. The end of the story seemed rushed and lacked the gritty detail in so many others in the series.

Outstanding

I’ve not read a lot of Jack Ryan books however I have seen the movies. This book felt right on target with the characters, but remained true to A&W. The only thing this book was missing was Tier 1, and Embers. If only there was a way to do a crossover it would’ve made this a 10 out of 10!
