About this listen

A missing Chinese scientist, unexplained noises emanating from under the Arctic ice, and a possible mole in American intelligence are just some of the problems that plague President Jack Ryan in the latest entry in Tom Clancy's number-one New York Times best-selling series.

Aboard an icebreaker in the Arctic Ocean, a sonar operator hears an unusual noise coming from the ocean floor. She can't isolate it and chalks the event up to an anomaly in a newly installed system. Meanwhile, operatives with the Chinese Ministry of State Security are dealing with their own mystery - the disappearance of brilliant but eccentric scientist, Liu Wangshu. They're desperate to keep his crucial knowledge of aerospace and naval technology out of their rivals' hands.

Finding Liu is too great an opportunity for any intelligence service to pass up, but there's one more problem. A high-level Chinese mole, codenamed Surveyor, has managed to infiltrate American intelligence. President Jack Ryan has only one choice: Send John Clark and his Campus team deep into China to find an old graduate student of the professor's who may hold the key to his whereabouts. It's a dangerous gamble, but with John Clark holding the cards, Jack Ryan is all in.

Not his best book

I found the book a bit complicated, too many catastrophes at one time. Could have used some comic relief.

A Good Listen

I enjoyed listening to this book. The story is what you would expect from a Clancy inspired novel. The narrator was excellent.

Jack Ryan saga continues

A good tale from the series. Enjoyed it and the focus on China and not Russia for a change. A good Spy Thriller.

Interesting storyline...

A bit difficult at first to keep all the characters straight. The narration was actually very good with the exception of a couple of places where the inflection seemed improbable for the character. Given the number and diversity of the characters, however, the narrator did a good job of differentiating them consistently. All the twists of plot you would expect for a Tom Clancy novel, with an unexpected ending, it did drag on a bit in places. I was glad when I finished it actually. It was ok, but not riveting, for me.

Love the series…wish the author did too

I love this series and I love the narration…but the author sometimes forgets the book is about the President and the Campus. In this installment, too many times we are treated to boring, in depth explanations of things we don’t care about. The last 2 to 3 hours are fantastic….but the author sometimes mails it in on other parts. If you like the series, you will like this book….but the author has to keep his focus on the main characters….and cut back on the explanations.

Getting close

I was excited that this book finally used the entire Campus Team. The lead up and story building at the beginning of the book reminded me a lot of Tom Clancy's earlier books. It seems that you get to the middle of the book and then everything gets rushed to finish. However I do think that this has been one of the better Jack Ryan novels written in Tom Clancy's name.
