About this listen

A return trip down the Mississippi River to Uncle Silas's farm is just the beginning of a yarn that includes twins, a diamond heist, a confidence man, a murder, and enough twists and turns to satisfy an avid mystery fan.

Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder, and along the way, Mark Twain examines the social customs, legal system, and family expectations of the time as only Twain could.

A sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Tom Sawyer Abroad, this is Mark Twain's satirical take on the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Like the two preceding novels, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn. Once a staple of juvenile fiction, then banned as politically incorrect, Twain's well-told story brings to life its time and place.

Critic reviews

"A careful and conscious artist, Twain became a master of the technical devices of exaggeration, irreverence, and deadpan seriousness; sensitive to the sound of language, he introduced colloquial speech into American fiction." (The Reader's Encyclopedia)
"Twain's best work is not only classic humorous writing but a graphic picture of the 19h-century American scene." (Chambers Biographical Dictionary)

Short, Yet Important

I think this is my new favorite Tom and Huck book! Tom starts out as his old arrogant and somewhat useless self, but then he makes a really big change near the last that largely redeems him in my eyes. Huck is his regular good natured self, providing the narrative, helping us readers to identify Tom's foolishness with a well rounded view of events. I daresn't reveal much, except to say that it is like mixing Sherlock Holmes and the American West, so I will just highly recommend this book.

The storytelling just leaves you wanting more!

Excellent Narrator. A wonderful short story that captures the time period. The 1 word is always cringey to hear. But it was accurate to the time.

Tom Sawyer and Huck Solves a Mystery

What a fun little short story! Tom and Huck go to Arkansas to visit an aunt. On the way they meet all kinds of characters and when they arrive they are faced with the mystery of a local death and trying to free Tom’s uncle of murder charges. Filled with typical Tom and Huck adventure and humor.

I enjoyed this very much but...

I love Mark Twain. His humor and dry wit are so entertaining. The narration was great. It got a little convoluted towards the end, but still great stuff.

it's quite a yarn

People don't listen to Mark Twain for the plot but rather the story telling. Huck Finn narrates this ridiculous tale. You can't help but laugh.

It’s a fun short romp

This is hardly Mark Twain’s magnum opus but it’s a fun little detective story and Twains humor shines here and Gardner is an excellent narrator. It’s worth a listen if it’s free like it was for me but I wouldn’t buy it.

Tom Sawyer; Mark Twain’s greatest subject!!!

When I think of Detective, I see it as a coming-of-age story of a young man progressing through life. It covers many things young males go through. Mainly mischievous behavior, with occasional moments of decent behavior. All in all, it was a great listen. The narration was excellent, and as usual, Mark Twain is a genius.
