I H.C. Andersens kunsteventyr Tommelise møder vi først en barnløs kvinde, der så inderligt ønsker sig et barn, at hun opsøger en heks for at få hjælp. Heksen giver kvinden et korn, som hun skal passe godt på. Kornet spirer og bliver til en smuk blomst. En dag åbner blomstens knop sig og ud kommer pigen Tommelise, der er så lille, at hun kan sejle på en åkande og sove i en nøddeskal. Mange ønsker at eje den lille og fine Tommelise, men hun er, på trods af sin størrelse, et væsen med ret til at være sig selv, og den ret må hun kæmpe for på sin videre færd i livet.
H.C. Andersen (1805-1875) var en dansk forfatter og kunstner. Han er i dag verdensberømt for sine eventyr, der er oversat til mere end 160 forskellige sprog, og nogle af de mest elskede er Den grimme ælling, Den lille havfrue, Nattergalen, Den standhaftige tinsoldat og Den lille pige med svovlstikkerne. Eventyrerne og deres fascinerende karakterer kendes af børn såvel som voksne, og de er blevet filmatiseret og opført som teaterstykker et utal af gange. Fra populærkulturen kender vi bl.a. Disneys version af Den lille havfrue fra 1989 og Frozen fra 2013, som er løst baseret på Snedronningen. Som tak for Andersens store bidrag til litteratur for børn fejres hans fødselsdag d. 2. april som International Children's Book Day.
