About this listen

As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events - his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the "ex-gay" movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible - that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance.

But more than just a memoir, Torn provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members - or who struggle with their own sexuality. Convinced that "in a culture that sees gays and Christians as enemies, gay Christians are in a unique position to bring peace," Lee demonstrates that people of faith on both sides of the debate can respect, learn from, and love one another.

Very thought-provoking.

A very different perspective on a widely controversial topic. Justin’s story and the way he sought answers has me rethinking my position on the topic of same sex marriage, which I never thought I would… his method of study and devotion to Christ is admirable. I still don’t know where I stand on this issue, 100%, but this book has definitely given me a different perspective and I’m thankful for it.

Loved this Book

Thank you for writing this book! It is one that the church should use and have on hand always. If the church loved like you talk about, like Jesus did, this world would be different. I will be sharing this book with others.

Wonderful “listen”

This book is moving — an important contribution that will build bridges across many perspectives and generations. Although it contains a study of key scripture, it is really an honest revealing of a life. Thank you, Justin Lee, for writing it.

Ideas Into Words

As a man that's always been torn between these two worlds, Lee's book gives me both hope and a voice. This is something I've always wanted to explain to my fellow Christian, as well as, my fellow LGBT community members, but could never formulate the ideas into words. Justin does it very well.

Moving and Informative

As someone from a conservative Christian background, I had no idea just how little I actually knew about this issue. Justin Lee graciously shares his experience and seeks to educate without patronizing others. His contribution to this conversation is imperative. Listening to this book, my paradigm shifted and my heart opened up. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a strong desire to love others and understand this issue more fully.

There’s a message in here for everyone

Whether you believe same-sex marriages can be ordained by God, whether you’re side A or side B, there is a message in here for you. Justin Lee takes the problems faced by most LGBT+ Christians (whether they are or affirming or not) and graciously shows the roots of these harms and how to solve them. This is the book I recommend to anyone who is trying to figure out what to do with the existence of LGBT+ people in this world that God created.

A humanizing look into the gay Christian

I've often struggled with Christianity especially on the gay versus Christian debate. Justin Lee's book help me realize that there is a room for Christianity and for gay people in it. I have to say that I actually reinvigorated my faith a bit. I look forward to Justin's future work and I hope I can help expand the gay debate in Christianity.

I must read if anyone wants to understand gay Christian's plight and what they're going through.
