About this listen

Read the Bible with Fresh Eyes as You See Scripture's Promise-Shaped Patterns

When you read the Bible, have you ever noticed parallels between certain people, events, and institutions? Should we understand Noah as a kind of new Adam, and if so, does that somehow point us to the second Adam? How are we to interpret these similarities?

In Typology—Understanding the Bible's Promise-Shaped Patterns, author James M. Hamilton Jr. shows that the similarities we find in the Bible are based on genuine historical correspondence and demonstrates how we recognize them in the repetition of words and phrases, the parallels between patterns of events, and key thematic equivalences. When understood in light of God's promises, these historical correspondences spotlight further repetitions that snowball on one another to build escalating significance.

This book stimulates fresh thinking on the relationship between the Old and New Testaments and will help pastors, preachers, and students better understand the dynamics of inner-biblical interpretation. It explores several of the "promise-shaped patterns" we see in the Old Testament including:

  • Adam and New Adam
  • Prophets, Priests, and Kings
  • The Righteous Sufferer
  • Creation
  • Exodus and New Exodus
  • Marriage

Hamilton shows that the prophets and sages of Israel learned to interpret Scripture from Moses and his writings. And by tracing the organic development of subsequent biblical patterns, he explains how these patterns created expectations that are fulfilled in Christ. Jesus himself taught his followers to understand the Old Testament in this way (Luke 24:45), and the authors of the New Testament taught the earliest followers of Jesus how to read the Bible through a typological lens.

Typology—Understanding the Bible's Promise-Shaped Patterns equips pastors, bible teachers, students, and serious Bible listeners to understand and embrace the typological interpretive perspective of the biblical authors. You will learn to listen to the Bible as it was intended by its original authors while cultivating a deeper love and appreciation for the Scriptures.

A ton of great insights

So much great insight and information. I'll definitely be re listening. . And returning to this book over and over. I probably should buy the hard copy. Yes that's what I will do, it will be easier to mark up the pages and bookmark the different topics. God has opened our eyes and hearts. Let him who has ears hear!

High View of Scripture Meets High Literary Attention

Hamilton persuasively demonstrated the way Biblical authors intentionally interact with earlier Scripture. His view of typology avoids cheap allegory and eisegesis by noting robust grammatical, theological, and literary connections across the Bible. Tracing themes developed in the which are fulfilled in Jesus Christ causes the relevance and beauty of the Old Testament to shine. If you want to be a serious student of Scripture, this book will give you tools to see the literary genius of the God of the Bible and the authors He inspired.

Great Insights

I learned a lot - great insights. However, I would not recommend the audio version. I am sure this would have been much more impactful to see the written text in a hard copy.

Wow I never knew

There was so much information about how the Bible authors interlaced the one common thread of God’s Words that I never put together. In some way this would make for a great college upper level class or one taught at a church over several months

You really need the text to follow along

I'm not finished yet (over 5 hours into it), but I'm having trouble following all that is shared and especially in the format he references (he consistently refers to sections in the book as well as giving a multitude of Bible references as if it is right in front of the reader). An accompanying PDF is mentioned but is not on the audible site for download. Sorry, but not a good audible only book. If you want to read this book, then I recommend getting the hard copy.
