Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In 1855, three years after it was published, it was called "the most popular novel of our day". A thrilling and important piece of American literature!

Interesting story from a historical perspective

Legend has it, upon meeting the author, President Lincoln said to her, "so you're the little old lady who wrote the book that started this great war?"
It may not be a actual quote, but considering this book was second only to the Bible in terms of distribution at the time of the Civil War, there's likely some truth to the statement.
Inspirational and uplifting in spite of the subject matter.

Any additional comments?
I love historical stories and non-fiction. With this one, I'm really having a tough time following it! I have to really concentrate to keep up with what's going on. I'm not sure if its the way it's read, or the way it's written, or both. A lot of the lingo and pronunciation loses me! So far (I'm not finished yet), I definitely find the story to be interesting, and want to finish it. I may check to see if there are other readers to choose from.Good story, but hard to keep my attention span
