About this listen

Sometimes a family's deepest silences hide the most important secrets. For Mina, a London-based travel writer, the enigmatic silence surrounding her aunt Carmela has become a personal obsession. Carmela disappeared from her Italian hometown long ago and is mentioned only in fragments and whispers. Mina has resisted prying, respectful of her family's Sardinian reserve. But now, with her mother battling cancer, it's time to learn the truth.

In 1952, Simius is a busy Sardinian town surrounded by fertile farms and orchards. Carmela Chirigoni, a farmer's daughter and talented seamstress, is engaged to Franco, son of the area's wealthiest family. Everyone agrees it's a good match. But Carmela's growing doubts about Franco's possessiveness are magnified when she meets Captain Joe Kavanagh. Joe, an American officer stationed at a local army base, is charismatic, intelligent, and married. Hired as his interpreter, Carmela resolves to ignore her feelings, knowing that any future together must bring upheaval and heartache to both families.

As Mina follows the threads of Carmela's life to uncover her fate, she will discover a past still deeply alive in the present, revealing a story of hope, sacrifice, and extraordinary love.

Loved the storyline

I wanted to know more about when they left Sardinia and their life together and it would’ve been nice if they had at least one child

The ending!!

I ordered this book bc I loved Sara Alexander’s book 40 thousand steps to the sea so much. That is my all time favorite Audible book of all time so far. The author narrating the beautiful stories is amazing. Under a sardinian sky was not as good, but still worth a credit to me. The story has a slow uphill start, but I decided to stick with it counting on the author/narrator. So glad I did. I hope Sara Alexander does more books.

The author’s voice catapults the reader to the sight, smells and even the tastes of this magical tale!

I found the words of this story combined with the author’s talented voice, held such descriptive abilities that I felt as though I was in the same room!! The food and scenery so richly described that you could almost smell and taste it. The raw emotions of love and loss so palpable that it brought me to tears.
The story takes its sweet time to develop and requires a bit of patience but well worth the wait. Like Mina, the reader is invited on the journey and longing for answers.
I would recommend this book to readers in search of adventure in far away places and the promise of love.

Beautiful narration

The author/narrator has a gift for writing and narrating her stories. There were several similarities to her first book, but not so significant as to make the story predictable.

Her description of the meal preparations were mouthwatering. I hope the author considers writing a cookbook of the foods described in her books!

A romance

I read this because I like 420 steps to the Sea, and this was also a good romance. I got goosebumps at the end of the book, and I appreciate the narrator's skill. I wonder if Sardinans are like these characters.

WARNING: It WILL make you hungry.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator is fantastic. The book was good, but I kept back the 5-star rating because when a historical fiction novel alternates between two time lines, I am used to it going back and forth. This one started in the "now" then jumped back to post-War Sardinia for 90% of the novel, then back to the present for the ending. I loved the story, but I got so engrossed in 1950s Carmela, that I forgot who the original narrator was and why she was even important. The final chapter jumps back to her, and all is revealed (though I'd guessed much of it by then - it wasn't that complicated).

More love story than history, this book is a travelogue of Sardinia. WARNING: It WILL make you hungry. There is so much about food preparation, ingredients, and directions for how to cook or bake that it could double as an Italian cookbook! Don't venture into it hungry.

I just loved this sweet story

This book starts out a bit slow... you need to stay in there and just soak up the entire atmosphere this book offers. It will take you to a place lost in time... and it will not disappoint.
