Publisher's summary

"The event which compels me into this book was my meeting with the celebrated mystic, teacher, and philosopher, George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff, whom I encountered as if by chance and came to love as if by design."

Kathryn Hulme's life was radically changed and enriched by the influence of Gurdjieff. Undiscovered Country is a tribute to him and his teachings, a vivid personal memoir of her experience as his student, and of the burning spiritual intensity that dominated her life as a result of his influence.

"This is a 'must' for all interested in Gurdjieff and his school, and strongly recommended for all who are concerned in the Pilgrimage of the Soul. It gives the best intimate picture I know of what it meant to be a 'follower of Gurdjieff's ideas'." (J. G. Bennett)

"A picture of the relation between a teacher and his pupil...the way he opens her to a wider world through a relation which touches the whole of one’s being." (Jeanne de Salzmann)

Undiscovered Gurdjieff

Perhaps one of the most touching narratives along with Firtz Peters' on Gurdjieff and his work in practical and human terms. Hulme achieves what many of Gurdjieff pupils haven't: to show the human behind the Master. Not only a beautiful tale but a profound and strong reflection on Gurdjieff's teaching. Recommended even for non followers of the Work. Amazing book.

A valuable resource for Gurdjieff studies

Having this great chronicle in audio form is a valuable contribution to the corpus of Fourth Way literature available on Audible. The narrator’s vocal timbre and pacing is excellent. I am concerned that neither the reader nor the director of the audiobook caught the significant errors in the pronunciation of many of the words. It seemed like a cold first-time read-through. These mispronunciations, not only of words from the Fourth Way lexicon, but also of ordinary words from everyday life, provide a major distraction to the flow of the text. Particularly hard to take was the persistent mispronunciation of “Beelzebub”, which is central to Gurdjieff’s magnum opus. Because it is a book on the Fourth Way, I used these mispronunciations as an opportunity to remember myself, and I kept going with the audiobook. I believe the mispronunciations were honest mistakes, and should have been caught by the director at least, but since it is a Gurdjieff book, one can’t be completely sure they were simply mistakes. Perhaps they are a way to separate the sheep from the goats! Definitely worth purchasing and listening to many, many times.

Undiscovered Country review

I loved the story but had a hard time understanding the narrator’s speaking for Gurdjieff and his accent. The narrator also mispronounced a number of words such as “raison d’etre” .
I loved the story and found it to be a wonderful portrayal of her teacher Gurdjieff .

Can’t understand this accent.

Who reads with an accent that can’t be understood? Ruined the whole reading. The accent is used more than the regular voice.
