About this listen

At a time when women were destined to become housewives, Jacqueline Susann let us dream. Anne, Neely, and Jennifer become best friends as struggling young women in New York City trying to make their mark. Eventually, they climb their way to the top of the entertainment industry only to find that there’s no place left to go but down, into the Valley of the Dolls.

Why this narrator?

I waited a very long time for this book to come out on audio. I was very excited to begin the morning my pre-order started playing, but only one sentence in, I thought it was joke, and the real narrator would start soon...
Who the hell chose Laverne Cox for this book? I like her as an actress, but not for narrating this book. The whole thing is cartoonish. I'm returning it. Hope they do it again later with a more fitting narrator.

and again...what's up with the NARRATOR?

I, too, love this book. Read it first when it came out back in the late 60s. But, I thought at first the narration was a joke or something, what with the lisp and the tone and different character voices, etc. Having read other comments here relating to this narrator, I think Audible owes us a NEW NARRATOR for this most favorite story of so many. What do ya say Audible? Can you folks at Audible not hear what went on with this audio version of this book? Really.

Sad it ended!

Loved returning back to the dolls! Very entertaining and I enjoyed the ups and downs of the girls.

Cox's is worth the listen

Laverne Cox's voice is a dream and perfect for this book. The book itself kind drags and certainly shows it's age but it's good to know what all the fuss was about.

Most obnoxious voices for characters

Sorry lady, it was torment listening to your Neely. Grating and obnoxious voices. Story still stands test of time

loved the book the narrative takes getting past

If the book wasn't so good no way could I have kept listening. The voices were hard to get past especially Neely's nails on a chalk board.

Great story, mediocre performance

Every line read with the exact same, slightly whiny intonation, even when totally wrong for the story.

Still a great story, BUT…

As much as I like Lavern Cox, her screaching voices for Jennifer and Neely almost made this audible book unbearable. The story still holds as a great one all these decades later. It is still the classic Hollywood tale.

Wrong Choice for Narrator

Love this story and was looking forward to listening. Unfortunately, this narrator did not do the story justice. Could barely get through it.
