About this listen

An offbeat lesbian romantic comedy starring penguins, plotting, and payback.

Muffin maker Olivia Roberts has had it with her awful exes taking advantage of her good nature. The theft of her nana's beloved stuffed penguin is the absolute last straw.

She puts up an ad at her local crime bookstore for a henchperson to help her enact a little mild revenge. To her astonishment, Margaret Blackwood, the mysterious, icy, and annoyingly opinionated bookstore owner, applies.

For two clever, capable women, they turn out to be woeful at vengeance. But much to their dismay, they discover they're pretty good at falling in love!

Contains mature themes.

Comedy Gold

If you’re a fan of Deadloch, you’ll be a fan of this book. It started out a bit slow but once the two leads started to interact the humor was amazing. I normally dislike age gap stories cause the power dynamic always feels icky. But this one actually did good with making it so there wasn’t much of any of that. Both the leads were strong and capable in their own right.

I can’t wait for more Lee Winter & Cat Gould collaborations; they are delicious fire together!!

I had a fantastic time listening to “Vengeance Planning for Amateurs,” and wow, did Cat Gould truly take Lee Winter’s words to another level! She aaaaaaaaate! 🔥

I enjoyed this audiobook from start to finish. This was my first time listening to Gould, and it definitely won’t be the last! Winter’s romantic comedy is as sharp and delightful as ever, and I’m thrilled that Gould is such an effective voice actor! Her narration truly brought the emotions to life—making me feel every moment even more deeply. Like, I found myself extra seething over Olivia’s exes (looking at you, Annalise!) and, most of all, over Margaret’s mother!

Gould’s narration elevated Olivia’s and Margaret’s vulnerabilities and their dynamic; I rooted for and cried with them even harder! 🩵

Plus, Gould’s Aussie accent made my favourite funny moments even more hilarious! I laughed with extra delight with the secondary characters, aka the Book Club Squad—the comedic spice in this romantic comedy.

In other words, Gould’s narration of “Vengeance…” made me an instant fan! ❤️‍🔥 Thus, I’m giving this audiobook my loudest recommendation! Whether you’ve read the book or not, Cat Gould’s first-ever narration of a Lee Winter book is a must-listen!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

P.S. Now I’m off to save money so I can buy another Cat Gould-narrated audiobook—Jess Lea’s “A Curious Woman.” I can’t wait to hear her performance as another formidable Margaret!!

Loved some of the terminology - henchperson!

Excellent book. Lighthearted exploration of tough topics. Thawing ice queen. Found community. The narration was wonderful. Does not disappoint.

Classic, Hijinks-Filled RomCom

Sometimes you think you need a holiday romance, but what you really need is a laugh-out-loud queer RomCom like Vengeance Planning for Amateurs. Lee Winter delivers a delightful mix of absurdity and heart, blending revenge plots, budding romance, and a wildly entertaining cast of characters.

The premise is gloriously ridiculous—a muffin maker hiring a henchperson to help her exact revenge—and the execution lives up to its promise. There’s humor in spades, from Olivia’s suggestion to name a cat Wednesday to the precocious young reader who seems to understand the adults better than they do themselves. But what really elevates this story is how it balances comedy with emotional depth. Olivia and Margaret might be plotting revenge, but their journey is as much about healing their own wounds as it is about delivering payback.

Every character, not just the leads, is a joy to spend time with. Whether it’s the origin of the name Trip, the caper-style antics, or the quietly tender moments between Olivia and Margaret, the story is packed with moments that will have you grinning from ear to ear.

Vengeance Planning for Amateurs isn’t just a romantic comedy; it’s a celebration of human quirks, connection, and growth. If you’re looking for a story that will warm your heart and tickle your funny bone, this one’s an absolute gem.

Laugh out loud funny!

This was a fantastic book that doesn't follow the usual troupe patterns. All of the characters were well developed and believable. Great job Lee Winter and excellent narration by Cat Gould! Excellent.

Humor at its best but there is so much more to this book than that!!

Lee Winter is one of my most favorite authors! From drama, to suspense, to romance and humor she’s amazing. So this book unsurprisingly was amazing! The humor was so well timed (and not only one kind) but there is so much more depth to this story than that. Both MCs are well crafted and they fit together so well. The story builds up that by the end you really want them to be together because it’s just right. The narrator did a good job. I would have preferred a bit more differentiation when it comes to the female voices. At times is was hard for me to know who was speaking unless it was Margaret. Her voice was the most distinctive one
