Münchhausen era un capitano di cavalleria russa nel 1740 che partecipò a due campagne contro l'Impero ottomano. Le storie su Münchhausen furono collezionate e pubblicate da un autore anonimo nel 1781 ed una versione in inglese venne pubblicata a Londra nel 1785 da Rudolf Erich Raspe.
Nel XIX secolo, la storia aveva subito numerose trasformazioni ed espansioni da parte di molti autori ed era stata tradotta in numerose lingue totalizzando più di cento diverse edizioni. Le avventure del barone di Münchausen sono state pubblicate anche in Russia, dove sono molto conosciute, specialmente nelle versioni per bambini.
Nel 2005 una statua di von Münchhausen è stata eretta nella città di Kaliningrad. Il personaggio del barone presta il nome alla sindrome di Münchhausen, in cui il paziente si procura disturbi fittizi per ottenere la compassione e l'attenzione altrui.
Il barone è stato ripreso in varie opere letterarie, alcune delle quali propongono un seguito alle sue mirabolanti avventure; tra queste un libro del sovietico Grigori Gorin che narrava la storia del barone dopo le avventure raccontate nel libro, e in particolare la sua lotta per dimostrarsi sano, da cui è stato tratto un film nel 1979.
Hugo Gernsback tentò di conferire una consistenza (fanta)scientifica alle avventure del barone nei racconti della sua serie Baron Münchhausen's Scientific Adventures pubblicata nel 1915. Münchhausen è stato l'oggetto di molte opere d'arte. La sua immagine più famosa appartiene probabilmente ad una edizione del libro del 1862 illustrata da Gustave Doré.
Rudolf Erich Raspe è stato uno scrittore, scienziato e bibliotecario tedesco. Rivelò in molti campi una vasta erudizione: pubblicò in latino lavori di storia naturale e curò un importante edizione delle opere di Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz.
I suoi scritti di geologia e mineralogia gli diedero tale fama che Benjamin Franklin gli fece visita nel suo secondo viaggio in Europa. Appropriatosi di una somma che aveva in consegna per far fronte ai debiti, dovette riparare in Inghilterra, dove venne radiato dalla Royal Society, visse della sua attività di pubblicista e di traduttore, finché un'altra truffa non lo costrinse a riparare in Irlanda. La sua popolarità è gran parte dovuta alle avventure del barone di Münchhausen.
Nell'opera, Raspe rielabora alcuni aneddoti che narrano le buffe, iperboliche spacconate da lui attribuite ad un personaggio realmente esistito, il barone Karl Hyeronimus von Münchhausen, un avventuroso aristocratico, che dopo aver guerreggiato con i russi contro i turchi si stabilì ad Hannover divertendosi a raccontare ai suoi amici inverosimili avventure di caccia. L'opera divenne popolarissima in tutto il mondo.
