About this listen
In Vietnam, Christopher Goscha tells the full history of Vietnam, from antiquity to the present day. Generations of emperors, rebels, priests, and colonizers left complicated legacies in this remarkable country. Periods of Chinese, French, and Japanese rule reshaped and modernized Vietnam, but so too did the colonial enterprises of the Vietnamese themselves as they extended their influence southward from the Red River Delta.
Over the centuries, numerous kingdoms, dynasties, and states have ruled over what is now Vietnam. Trinh and Nguyen military lords led competing states in the 17th century. French colonizers grouped Vietnam with Laos and Cambodia in an Indochinese Union, but governed Vietnam itself as three separate territorial units. The bloody Cold War-era and the American-backed Republic of Vietnam was only the most recent instance when war divided and transformed Vietnam.
A major achievement, Vietnam offers the grand narrative of the country's complex past and the creation of the modern state of Vietnam. At a time when more and more visitors come to Vietnam and Southeast Asia is again at the center of intense global rivalries, this is the definitive single-volume history for anyone seeking to understand Vietnam today.

Story
On May 7, 1954, when the bullets stopped and the air stilled in Dien Bien Phu, there was no doubt that Vietnam could fight a mighty colonial power and win. After nearly a decade of struggle, a nation forged in the crucible of war had achieved a victory undreamed of by any other national liberation movement. The Road to Dien Bien Phu tells the story of how Ho Chi Minh turned a ragtag guerrilla army into a modern fighting force capable of bringing down the formidable French army.

Since its beginnings, Poland has been a moving target, geographically as well as demographically, and the very definition of who is a Pole has been in flux. In the late medieval and early modern periods, the country grew to be the largest in continental Europe, only to be later wiped off the map for more than a century. Yet even under these constraints, Poles persisted in their desire to wrest from their oppressors a modicum of national dignity and, ultimately, managed to achieve much more than that.

More than 40 years after it ended, the Vietnam War continues to haunt our country. We still argue over why we were there, whether we could have won, and who was right and wrong in their response to the conflict. When the war divided the country, it created deep political fault lines that continue to divide us today. Now, continuing in the tradition of their critically acclaimed collaborations, the authors draw on dozens and dozens of interviews in America and Vietnam to give us the perspectives of people involved at all levels of the war.

Starting in early 1915, the Ottoman Turks began deporting and killing hundreds of thousands of Armenians in the first major genocide of the 20th century. By the end of the First World War, the number of Armenians in what would become Turkey had been reduced by 90 percent - more than 1,000,000 people. A century later, the Armenian genocide remains controversial but relatively unknown, overshadowed by later slaughters and the chasm separating Turkish and Armenian versions of events.

It offers a revealing look at how events, people, and institutions are shaped by currents that sometimes reach back hundreds of years. The book covers the complex history of the diverse societies and economies of Iran against the background of dynastic changes, revolutions, civil wars, foreign occupation, and the rise of the Islamic Republic.

Story
In The Cold War, Odd Arne Westad offers a new perspective on a century when a superpower rivalry and an ideological war transformed every corner of our globe. We traditionally think of the Cold War as a post-World War II diplomatic and military conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. But in this major new work, Westad argues that the conflict must be understood as a global ideological confrontation with roots in the industrial revolution and with continuing implications for the world today.

Robert Tombs' momentous The English and Their History is both a startlingly fresh and a uniquely inclusive account of the people who have a claim to be the oldest nation in the world. The English first came into existence as an idea, before they had a common ruler and before the country they lived in even had a name. They have lasted as a recognizable entity ever since, and their defining national institutions can be traced back to the earliest years of their history.

Chris Harman describes the shape and course of human history as a narrative of ordinary people forming and re-forming complex societies in pursuit of common human goals. Interacting with the forces of technological change as well as the impact of powerful individuals and revolutionary ideas, these societies have engendered events familiar to every schoolchild-from the empires of antiquity to the world wars of the 20th century. In a bravura conclusion, Chris Harman exposes the reductive complacency of contemporary capitalism.

Even a hundred years after the events that led to the emergence of the world's first self-proclaimed socialist state, debate continues over whether, as historian E. H. Carr put it decades ago, these earth-shaking days were a "landmark in the emancipation of mankind from past oppression" or "a crime and a disaster."

In this comprehensive history, Stanley Karnow demystifies the tragic ordeal of America's war in Vietnam. The book's central theme is that America's leaders, prompted as much by domestic politics as by global ambitions, carried the United States into Southeast Asia with little regard for the realities of the region. Karnow elucidates the decision-making process in Washington and Asia and recounts the political and military events that occurred after the Americans arrived in Vietnam.

From a failed state with no democratic tradition, ruined and partitioned by war, and sapped by a half-century of colonial rule, South Korea transformed itself in just 50 years into an economic powerhouse and a democracy that serves as a model for other countries. China and Japan have cultural and political connections that stretch back 1,500 years. But today, their relationship is strained. China's military buildup deeply worries Japan, while Japan's brutal occupation of China in World War II remains an open wound. In recent years, less than 10 percent of each population had positive feelings toward the other, and both countries insist that the other side must deal openly with its history before relations can improve. Ezra Vogel's China and Japan examines key turning points in Sino-Japanese history.

Informative history of modern Vietnam history
Informative modern history of Vietnam. It is quite disappointing with the lack of use of proper vietnamese terminologies and names, which is a no excuse... Just look at other Việt Nam history book by Ben Kiernan, proper vietnamese was used. Some other reviews mentioned that the narrator butchered the Vietnamese names and terminologies, I think the author was the problem not the narrator.

Great modern history of Vietnam
Christopher Goscha creates an impressive modern history of Vietnam, albeit one with a very sloppy structure. It should be noted that he focuses primarily on the twentieth century with only two chapters on the nineteenth century and one on Vietnams history before that. One of the greatest strengths of his book is acknowledging Vietnam’s diverse ethnic make up and the history which it reflects. The problem of the structure is shown here however, since his chapter on it is the last before the epilogue. With that said, it is still an excellent and eye opening book which challenges old stereotypes and notions about Vietnam’s past while remaining objective and respectful. 4.5 Stars.

interesting but difficult emotionally
The history is eye opening but sometimes it’s difficult to handle more than 15 minutes at a time because of the charged nature.
The narrator was ok but mispronounced all Vietnamese words. He even calls Viet Nam Viet Nom. Every name was butchered.
So this is best if you have the book as well as the audible. They should have gotten a Viet person to read it.

Informative, a bit dry
Many English language histories of Vietnam focus on the American war, but Goscha covers some history before colonialism, a thorough treatment of the French colonial period, and history since 1975 including trends in culture and governance. The level of detail varies throughout the book and some sections are very dense with names that won’t have significance to casual western readers.
In combination with the writing, the narration is a bit flat, but the book was informative.

Bad pronunciation
This person is not suitable to read Vietnamese names. At least spend some time to do research on how to pronounce the names correctly. Some of the names sound offensive like Phuc needs to be read correctly. Such a nice name should not be made fun by listeners just because the reader is ignorant.

Great Book
After having read many books on Vietnam through a French or American lens, I was delighted to get a more local perspective.

Probably better to read than to listen to
This doesn’t work well as a audiobook, and absolutely needs at least an attached PDF of any historical map material, and a glossary of names, and an historical timeline, which I assume were in the printed edition. The author’s sentence structure is unfortunately awkward, and inverted, and dense, and hard to process while listening - sometimes I had to rewind a paragraph a few times to comprehend what was being said. Since this is nonfiction, a very light editing to adapt the book to audio would’ve improved it greatly. I was glad to learn more about pre-20th century Vietnam, Bruce is most histories that focus only on the Vietnam War , but again the book needed better structure, maybe just even an introductory paragraph or two in each section telling us clearly the overall ark of development in the chapter. The biggest lack is any idea of the personal characters or characteristics of the historical persons, and a nearly full omission of their benevolence, or cruelty, or ruthlessness or honesty and integrity, or combination of all of those.
The book as audiobook would benefit from some technical changes: First, it’s not too late to add a PDF to the audiobook with at least the historical maps that I assume were in the printed edition. Second, whether the Bietnamese is mispronounced or not (as complained by earlier reviewers), the reader should at least have slowed down and emphasized and enunciated the names carefully, since they are unfamiliar to Western readers and thus very hard to keep straight. Third, even if the author uses acronyms heavily in the text,
