Varg Freeborn is an author, strength and fitness coach, violence educator, and a lethal force instructor widely known for his unique background in the violent criminal underworld. Not only did I read the book, I listened to the Audio version as well, it’s that good. Varg does an outstanding job of explaining his first hand experiences and stories within the entire book. VOM is a great guide in helping understand the violence in this world and the consequences. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!

The authors narration takes getting used to, but by the end of the book he is much smoother.
His techniques for learning are excellent and can be applied to any discipline

This is a book that will seem violent to the average suburbanite but practical to a student of violence A.K.A. a self defense student. Varg has articulated the realities of violence and the fundamental knowledge required to prepare yourself for a violent criminal encounter. This is a great book for the beginning student and seasoned instructor. Varg's position on mental preparedness, situational awareness and posturing, and training methodologies are spot on.

Freeborn does an excellent job of shining a spotlight on most everything subpar in the self-defense arena, especially in challenging outdated theories and over-inflated egos. Several sacred cows get hit.

As a student, there is plenty of food for thought to challenge thinking on what you need to know. As an instructor, there is plenty of food for thought about what you should be teaching. For both - it becomes crystal clear - you're probably not a SWAT Jesus Ninja Operator and poking holes in paper targets at the local range isn't going to make you High Speed-Low Drag when SHTF.

Throughout VoM, it's apparent that self-defense is far more than what many promote it to be. It's also commendable that he calls out the entire 2A Community on the integrity of our words- he's spot on that words matter.... "Tactical"; 'nuff said.

There were a couple of aspects/ subjects which might have made the book more appealing to a broader audience but, 1) they don't take away from the value of Freeborn's book and 2) I doubt he'll care to address them in any future publications or classes. This oddly enough, reflects back on the one antiquated sacred cow that didn't get hit. It's ok; we're still promoting the value of Varg's VoM... we're accustomed to being the overlooked demographic.

Author is very knowledgeable on subject and has unique perspective. This book is a rare chance to look inside the violent criminal mind and assess your own level of mental preparedness.

The most informative book I’ve read as a trained military shooter and Krav Maga instructor. I’ve adjusted my own skill sets and training because of Varg’s wisdom. My only critique is on the Audible narrator. I wish the reader was more polished. Odd pauses, pronouncing the letter “A”as “AY”not the more colloquial “uh”. Same with the word “the”as “thee”instead of thuh. You’ll understand what I mean when you listen to it. Small points but annoying over entire book to those of us who are shooters and grammarians.

I bought this book a week ago and I am already listening to it a 2nd time. There is so much good stuff I wanted to write more notes this time around. Insights such as Don't be a sheepdog. Are legal battles, death or maiming worth it to get into an argument with someone who cuts you off. No.
Understanding how the criminal or a psychopaths brain works such as how Bundy was able to kill 30 women by pretending to be injured so they would let their guard down. Book has interesting insights into how to be prepared and weigh the risks against the possible outcomes to make good decisions. I would highly recommend buying the book. I prefer the audio version.

I usually purchase books by Navy Seals, green berets, etc. having been a Marine for 22 years and a deputy sheriff for 7, I’ve seen my share of violence. This should be required reading for anyone that carries a weapon and fancies themselves a “sheepdog.” There’s so much more to it than all the gear and 5-11 pants. This book does a good job of introducing violence, it’s aftermath, and consequences.

Varg is a good man who walks his talks and shares his experiences with others to make a greater difference in this world. Hear him out! He has put tremendous efforts into the book, with compassion and vulnerability, and now this Audiobook version is finally released with his original, captivating voice! Highly recommend to all walks of life whether you’re a trainer or a civilian, especially those who have gone through any adversities or know anyone who has gone through adversities in life. Varg displays his firsthand perspectives clearly through his stories, from surviving to thriving, on the field and in personal life. Keep empowering the lives that you touch, Varg, and thank you for everything you do!!!
