About this listen

Seattle's a great place to live...if it weren't for the undead.

For once, Joanne Walker's not out to save the world. She's come to terms with the host of shamanic powers she's been given, her job as a police detective has been relatively calm, and she's got a love life for the first time in memory. Not bad for a woman who started out the year mostly dead.

But it's Halloween, and the undead have just crashed Joanne's party.

Now, with her mentor Coyote still missing, she has to figure out how to break the spell that has let the ghosts, zombies and even the Wild Hunt come back. Unfortunately, there's no shamanic handbook explaining how to deal with the walking dead. And if they have anything to say about it - which they do - no one's getting out of there alive.

Not a zombie fan, but

Love this series and this book! I love how the main character is always a work in progress. She'll admit she doesn't know it all, but isn't a whiney female who things just accidently fall into place for her.

Overwritten but the narrator saves it...

Gabra Zackman brings a steely edge to a good but overwritten story - (Really how much dead zombie guts/slime and triple thinking protagonist nuance does a story need?) Answer: less than is offered... Ms. Zackman digests it all with wry intonation and a lot of huzpah. All and all it is an enjoyable listen. I am going for the series.

I love this series

This was another excellent book. I love Joanie's inner voice. I wish all of Murphy's writings were available on audible.com. Murphy, Ilona Andrews, Karen Chance, and Maria Snyder are my favorite authors. Please get all of their writings on audible.com. As always, Gabra Zackman is wonderful.

the voice was not good

the whistling at the “S” words is annoying and irritating the story wold be good without it.

Great book in a terrific series.

I have fallen for this series as well as for the Negotiator series. C. E. Murphy keeps the action realistic if it is possible in at a fantasy level as well as moving. Never a dull moment in Joanne's life. However, it is not all "peaches and cream" since she finally accepted her shaman powers. The mechanic tie-ins help keep the story anchored as it makes sense that you would use what you know to figure out things that are "way out" of your knowledge realm. I definitely recommend this series and agree with the other reviewers to get a complete understanding of Joanne's life and what makes her tick --- you need to read the series in order. However, if you just want to pick up a good action fantasy book to read and not worry too much about what has happened this book does a good job of explaining and catching you up without bogging down the series reader.

A Satisfying Installment in the Series.

A good continuation of Jo's story. She's learning to embrace more of who she is. And Gabra Zackman's narration is wonderful as always.

I do recommend reading the series in order.

great story, very emotional the last half hour

Went through quite a few tissues during the last half hour. Joanne is growing in her power, and her knowledge of her power and how to use it. Excellent narration. Brings everyone to life. Outstanding series.

C E Murphey Rocks

This is one of my all time favorite series. Joanna Walker is such a kick ass heroine. Lots of philosophy, but also, lots of 'what the hell' lets go for it. Great cast of characters. Well written, unique perspective on urban fantasy.

Narrator nearly ruined it

I'd forgotten how much I dislike Ms Zackman's style of halting narration. I made it through the book with it's interesting storyline in spite of the reader.
