About this listen

On August 9, 1945, on the tiny island of Tinian in the South Pacific, a 25-year-old American Army Air Corps major named Charles W. Sweeney climbed aboard a B-29 Superfortress in command of his first combat mission, one devised specifically to bring a long and terrible war to a necessary conclusion....

The last military officer to command an atomic mission, Maj. Gen. Charles W. Sweeney has the unique distinction of having been an integral part of both the Hiroshima and the Nagasaki bombing runs. Now updated with a new epilogue from the coauthor, Sweeney's book is an extraordinary chronicle of the months of careful planning and training; the setbacks, secrecy, and snafus; and the nerve-shattering final seconds and the astonishing aftermath of what is arguably the most significant single event in modern history: the employment of an atomic weapon during wartime.

Awesome look at the first and second drip.

As a retired USAF weapons loader, I loved this story. It goes into the background of all the stuff I went thru as a loader. Secrets that can't be told to the normal people as we went thru our jobs. If I could write a book about my time in the military, it would be a not so fun read, nowhere near this interesting. Loved reading the book, loved listening to it more.

one of my favorite audio books

this book is so well put together. this part of our military history is little known and I found it fascinating. it reads like an autobiography and doesn't overwhelm you with military jargon and facts.

Must read!

This fit exactly with other books about the atomic bombings. It supported most of that material, but more importantly, supplied material missing from other works. It also explained a few mysteries. Easy to understand and listen to.
