About this listen
Most of us are only dreaming it. This is the life of an unruly, desperate, supergifted, ultragious bad boy. How deep is he? What is the colour of his tears? Is it possible to be, nevertheless, a saint?

Story
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Story
There's no one like Etgar Keret. His stories take place at the crossroads of the fantastical, searing, and hilarious. His characters grapple with parenthood and family, war and games, marijuana and cake, memory and love. These stories never go to the expected place, but always surprise, entertain, and move.... In "Arctic Lizard", a young boy narrates a post-apocalyptic version of the world where a youth army wages an unending war, rewarded by collecting prizes. A father tries to shield his son from the inevitable in "Fly Already".

In this “miracle of literary serendipity” (The Washington Post), after finding himself deep in the thrall of heroin addiction, the soldier arrives at what seems like the only logical solution: robbing banks. Written by a singularly talented, wildly imaginative debut novelist, Cherry is a bracingly funny and unexpectedly tender work of fiction straight from the dark heart of America.

Strange Book
Strange book. Tone is all over the map, moving through decades of a man’s life. Story only slows down on the most vicious and violent episodes. Even the title does not tie directly into the story, more of a running theme.

love it or hate it!
There are, unfortunately, some translation gaps, but this is the exotic touch of the audiobook. Mike Reaves is delicious and the story is rough, fluent, historically attached. I felt like in a rollercoaster. The author has a wonderful talent and I trust his spirit. The ending scene is a deep cut.

Had problems with this one
I don't know if it's just me or what but this book made no sense to me.
I'm wondering if you have to be younger to appreciate it. I really tried but
I could not figure this one out. I kept going back to see what I missed but
it wasn't that at all. I just didn't get the storyline.
I suspect it may be that I'm over 50 but not sure.
Narrator was good.
I was given this book at no charge by the author and hate to leave this kind of review
but he wanted an honest one so here it is.

Didn't make sense to me
This story didn't make a bit of sense to me, perhaps due in part to the foreign setting, culture and even translation. Whatever, it's not my sort of story.
Mike Reaves reminds me a lot of one of my favorite narrators, Ray Foushee. His performance is quite satisfactory.
NOTE: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
