Publisher's summary

When Blue Bird and her grandmother leave their family's camp to gather beans for the long, threatening winter, they inadvertently avoid the horrible fate that befalls the rest of the family. Luckily, the two women are adopted by a nearby Dakota community and are eventually integrated into their kinship circles. Ella Cara Deloria's tale follows Blue Bird and her daughter, Waterlily, through the intricate kinship practices that created unity among her people.

Waterlily, published after Deloria's death and generally viewed as the masterpiece of her career, offers a captivating glimpse into the daily life of the 19th-century Sioux. This new Bison Books edition features an introduction by Susan Gardner.

The book is published by University of Nebraska Press.

You must read / listen to book !

A friend recommended this book and I was shocked and pleasantly surprised how wonderful it is. It is a true glimpse into native American life two centuries ago the characters are engaging and the knowledge passed on is priceless. Highly recommend!

Very good book.

Loved it. I feel that it is a must read for youth to read. Provides an in depth look into Dakota like, which was much similar to Lakota ways of life.

Would’ve loved a Lakota Narrator

The narration took away genuineness of the book, the was I read it I can imagine a voice for the author, but the narrator that audible chose for this book really detracted from authenticity of the book, mainly because of the mispronunciations of the Lakota/Dakota words. Audible should hire Lakota or native narrators who pronounce the language correctly for books like this

Amazing Story

Waterlily is an amazing story of life among the Dakota before colonization. The author brings in many details of daily life from a woman's perspective that are missing in many male-authored ethnographies and ethnographic fiction stories.

The only drawback to the Audible version is that the narrator is not a Dakota/Lakota/Nakota person or, at least, a Native person. The authenticity of the story is lost with the butchering of the Dakota language throughout. Although not unpleasant in tone, the narrator's southern(?) accent can be distracting. It would be a tremendous benefit to this story if Audible were able to acquire a Native narrator.

Great story and terrible narration.

Audible must do a better job sourcing knowledgeable narrators for the authors work. For this reason I am returning this book.

They need a new Narrator

What is with this Narrator? They couldn't find a Native American Narrator? This lady with her fake Swedish twang is so annoying. I just couldn't get past the first chapter.

Narrator is awful

Hard to get past stilted narration. The forward was just endless. Not much of a story yet. May not finish
