From New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs, a wrenching but life-affirming novel based on a true story of survival, friendship, and redemption. As a lifelong Catholic, who suffered some abuse by a nun in my teenage years, this book really touched my heart. That woman has since died, but I have nothing but contempt for what she did to me.

The very best of Susan Wiggs

This book offers a compelling and heartfelt look into life at the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, also known as the Sisters of Charity, in Buffalo, NY, during the height of Catholic education in the city. Susan masterfully captures the atmosphere of the time, vividly describing the streets, neighborhoods, and institutions that shaped so many lives. For anyone who ever attended Catholic school in Buffalo, her storytelling will resonate deeply.

This is a powerful exploration of grief, hardship, and loss; echoing the experiences of the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland. It’s a stark reminder that these kinds of religious institutions and reform schools were not unique to one region.

The book thoughtfully weaves in themes of coming of age, sexuality, the Vietnam War and draft, pop culture, race relations, politics, adoption, institutional corruption, and the complex legacy of faith-based systems.

A deeply moving and eye-opening read this is a story that stays with you long after the final page.

Addressing the chronic victimizing issues and abuse that happens to so many women and children that have been separated for whatever reason.

Wiggs focuses on 1945 through 1975 w >1975 institutions in the United States & Ireland that have been now been exposed, and how it has affected the lives of all of those involved.

Most important she also shares solutions to some of the problems and how people are helping these days to support victims in attempting to keep this from ever happening again.

For whatever reason it was hard for me to initially get into the book, but the depth of Susan Wiggs writting draws you in, and helps you to understand how situations occur, how people can ignorantly make mistakes, and most important how they can overcome situations and help others to do the same.

At the end of the book she shares more statistics, all the people that were involved in helping her to bring their situations to light.
She also shares support groups to help all people involved with issues and situations where adoption has caused trauma and unresolved issues in their lives,
so they don't have to suffer alone and continue to be victimized.

Without awareness we can't change broken corrupt systems, and behaviors that we may have ignorantly victimize and or victimize people that come to you for help❤️

This book also helps you to understand the diversity of all people involved and the journeys they through,
whether it be legal or illegal.

I can't thank you enough
