Excellent insight into a lover of the beautiful game

While I only recommend this book for football fans, anyone who knows the game will respect the passion with which Arsène speaks. An extremely intelligent and rational person describing his irrational love for a sport. People with such a level headed and realistic approach to life’s challenges are becoming especially rare in our simplistic time full dominated by surface level emotion.

Wenger did a Wenger

it's good but missing juicy details on transfers I wanted to hear. I'm not sure what I was expecting from a man who kept so much close to his chest.

Arsenal fans will enjoy this

Fans of Arsenal will enjoy, perhaps adore this book. Fans of football/soccer in general, maybe not so much.

It's great to hear the Professor's voice, telling his own story. It's a very point to point story: I grew up, I played football, I became a manager, I managed here, here, here, then I arrived at Arsenal. Maybe his clinical approach to life and storytelling is what made him a great football manager, but it's not enthralling for the reader. The players that were so key to the Arsenal titles of the late 1990s and early 2000s get short shrift: the names Ian Wright and Thierry Henry are barely mentioned. One thing that the book is missing is any feeling of what it meant to win the league titles and FA Cups that made The Invincibles an all-time great team. That may be just the way Wenger remembers those times, as goals that were to be, and were, achieved, but it might have been enjoyable to hear a bit more about the emotion surrounding those wins.

What gets a lot of attention is how Wenger saw the move from Highbury to Emirates Stadium. We get a lot of information about the need for the new stadium, the costs, how the costs affected the wage budget, how the wage budget could not exceed 50 percent of total expenditure, and that it had an impact on the team's performance on the field. All of this confirms something I as an Arsenal fan suspected for years: that Arsenal's board wasn't so concerned with results on the field as long as the bottom line results were positive. Wenger seems to be ok with that, based on his recollection. Unfortunately, as Wenger and Arsenal discovered, once winning becomes secondary, it quickly becomes even less than that. This is symptomatic of current owner Stan Kroenke and all of the teams he owns in various leagues, that they are not contenders for championships: Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, and of course Arsenal.

I'm glad I listened to this book and I enjoyed it. If you are a fan of Arsenal and/or Arsene Wenger, you likely will too. Anyone else? I'm not so sure. The book could have used a better edit and a bit more organization.

Wenger is legend and class

Wenger is very honest regarding his life, growth, failures and successes. Not only is he a true arsenal legend but he is a class act and a world football legend and true ambassador to the beautiful game!

Great book from a class act!

For me- Wenger represents a class act that we football fans don’t see as much in the game anymore. He brought a beautiful style of football to Arsenal, that stood the test of time, while also bringing a sense of class and decency to the game, which sadly is becoming extinct (in my opinion).

I would have loved to have him talk more about the dynamics of his Arsenal teams in this book, but I was very impressed with his assessment of the game and clear thought process into his current position at FIFA and how he sees the future of the game.

All in all, an enjoyable listen, and fantastic insight into the mindset of a true giant of the game!

Fascinating deep dive

was really great to listen to the book as read by the author himself. It is easy to feel the words as he speaks them. A fascinating deep dive into one of Soccer's great minds.

Great insight into a legend

I've followed Arsenal throughout Wenger's entire career with the club and beyond. He's no stranger to me having read articles/books/interviews by Amy Lawrence and John Cross. However, this was wonderful to hear the story through his view, particularly on the Highbury to Emirates transition. It's well paced and engaging. His English is impeccable, and it was a joy to hear his voice once again.
