Acerca de esta escucha

A teenage girl breaks free from her father’s world of isolation to discover that her whole life is a lie in this propulsive new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Things and Watch Me Disappear.

“A twisty, sharp coming-of-age story for our strange techno-utopian times.”—Rachel Khong, author of Real Americans

The first thing you have to understand is that my father was my entire world.

Growing up in an isolated cabin in Montana in the mid-1990s, Jane knows only the world that she and her father live in: the woodstove that heats their home, the vegetable garden where they try to eke out a subsistence, the books of nineteenth-century philosophy that her father gives her to read in lieu of going to school. Her father is elusive about their pasts, giving Jane little beyond the facts that they once lived in the Bay Area and that her mother died in a car accident, the crash propelling him to move Jane off the grid to raise her in a Waldenesque utopia.

As Jane becomes a teenager she starts pushing against the boundaries of her restricted world. She begs to accompany her father on his occasional trips away from the cabin. But when Jane realizes that her devotion to her father has made her an accomplice to a horrific crime, she flees Montana to the only place she knows to look for answers about her mysterious past, and her mother’s death: San Francisco. It is a city in the midst of a seismic change, where her quest to understand herself will force her to reckon with both the possibilities and the perils of the fledgling internet, and where she will come to question everything she values.

In this sweeping, suspenseful novel from bestselling author Janelle Brown, we see a young woman on a quest to understand how we come to know ourselves. It is a bold and unforgettable story about parents and children; nature and technology; innocence and knowledge; the losses of our past and our dreams for the future.

Reseñas de la Crítica

What Kind of Paradise is a twisty, sharp coming-of-age story for our strange techno-utopian times. It brims with suspense and family secrets, all while asking big questions about the cost of progress.”—Rachel Khong, author of Real Americans

“This is the work of a writer who truly knows how to thrill. Janelle Brown has constructed a tender novel about parents and children, one that leaves readers weighing unanswerable questions of ethics and responsibility.”—Rumaan Alam, author of Entitlement and Leave the World Behind

“An intelligent and thoughtful page-turner that explores the blurry lines between right and wrong, truth and fiction, choice and fate . . . Janelle Brown methodically unravels my favorite kind of mystery—that of who we are and what we believe at our deepest core.”—Jessica Knoll, author of Bright Young Women and Luckiest Girl Alive

Editorial Review

Paradise lost ... and found
Janelle Brown writes the books that keep me up at night, meaning I’m fighting off sleep so that I can keep listening. Her twisty narratives, including her 2020 breakout hit Pretty Things and 2022’s I’ll Be You, are rife with themes of identity, family trauma, and moral dilemmas. In What Kind of Paradise, Jane is not like her tech-obsessed peers. Living in an isolated Montana cabin with her enigmatic father, the shadows of her family’s mysterious history loom large until a shocking event catapults Jane into newfound independence and she sets out to discover the truth of who she really is. Helen Laser narrates, and Peter Ganim’s short but impactful performance as Jane’s dad gives voice to the man behind the monster. This nostalgic coming-of-age exploration of father-daughter relationships, young love, and the ’90s dot-com bubble further solidifies Brown as an auto-download author for me. —Margaret H., Audible Editor

Love Janelle Brown and this new release didn’t disappoint. I was hooked from the beginning and finished in a weekend . It did start off feeling similar to The Great Alone but the plot takes a sharp turn in another direction a few hours in and gets so good! Great performance too. The ending felt a little rushed over with all the build up but loved the book overall.

Couldn’t put it down

I liked all of the book. But this story was similar to the Unibomber of the 1990s.

I enjoyed the time period of this book. It was very intriguing.

I’ve loved every Janelle Brown novel and this one is no different. If I had read this storyline alone I might have thought it was a subject that wouldn’t resonate with me but it was so easy to get sucked into. It definitely has the “coming of age” aspect that I fell in love with in novels like “The Great Alone” and “Where the Crawdads Sing.” Love it, read it!

Very well written with wonderful character development. Unchecked mental illness again proving the old adage "hurt people, hurt people". This would be a great book club discussion book.
Perfect narration added to this listen. Highly recommend.

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. I don’t wanna put any spoilers in, so I won’t, however let’s just say I was very disappointed in one of the characters actions… However, I think it means that Ms Brown truly knows how to write the human condition because people aren’t always as we would want them to be.

I read her books without knowing what they are even about! This one is just brilliant! It’s different but sucks you in and leaves you unable to stop listening until you know how it ends! Enjoy every second!

It was a good story, but I was disappointed at some points because it felt a little bit like a young adult novel. Still very enjoyable though.

Long awaited, good to hear JB’s voice again

This book was well written and very interesting. A young 4 year old girl grows up with her dad off the grid . There have been books written about this but the reasons for it were interesting when the daughter at age 17 comes into the big world . Makes you think are children better off not being exposed to the world and its harshness or are the parents selfish and self serving to their own wants to the child . The depth of this book runs deeper than you can comprehend and in the end you will be left with a lot to think about. It will stay with you for awhile and I like books that do that .

Very interesting, would make for a good group book discussion

i loved the initial portion of the novel involving the girl and her father living in the remote cabin. I was fascinated by the interactions between the two characters and eager to find out what would happen to the girl. No spoilers here, but most of the remainder of the story was less realistic and engaging for me. Although it wasn't a major part of the novel, the protagonist's relationship with her mother was poignant.

Uneven storyline
