Publisher's summary

In small-town Laurel Ridge, not everything is as simple as it appears.

After a terrible betrayal, Allison Standish flees Philadelphia for the small Amish village of Laurel Ridge to claim an unexpected inheritance. Allison intends to sell the mansion housing various shops on Main Street - until she meets Nick Whiting, a single father and tenant of Blackburn House, who challenges everything she believes about her estranged grandmother and the Amish community.

Strange stipulations in her grandmother's will soon bring distant relatives and seething townsfolk to Allison's door. As anonymous threats escalate, Nick grows protective of Allison, and she finds herself falling for the handsome carpenter. But then she discovers her grandmother's death may not have been accidental, and someone wants Allison gone. Permanently.

It was enjoyable

The story was predictable but pretty fun. A solid summer read. The narration was a bit simplistic but not distracting.

Interesting story line, but really bad narration

The story line has the bones of a decent mystery. However the narrator is so bad at any of the voices other than the main character, it’s almost painful to listen to. Particularly bad is her but butchering of the Amish dialect and voice of the child character.

I made to the end, but only because it was a distraction while doing chores.

Maybe this would have been better as a Kindle book.

Narration

The narration was horrible. Very hard to get through this book. Luckily plenty of chores needed to be done, to help distract me.

Narration

The book wasn’t bad but the narration made the book boring. I may have liked it much better with different narrator.

Very well written

I expected a good story. And to be entertained. What I didn't expect was the depth of character and quick assessment of each individual. The individual personalities were well defined. The story kept my interest and I wasn't convinced I knew who "did" it up to the very end! I will be reading the next one for sure. The narration was above average and I appreciated a story I could let my granddaughter read.

Reader

I did not like the narrator. Her voice too fake and it graded on my nerves. I’m cringing knowing that she is the narrator for the next book. Other than that The storyline was good.

Great 1st in series!!

I really enjoyed the audiobook Where Secrets Sleep by Marta Perry! It was my first book by this author, and I now plan to work my way through the whole series. I wasn't sure if I would really be able to get into this book because I do not know much about the Amish community. I quickly came to the conclusion that it did not matter because the main character was just like me and didn't know much, either. The author was fantastic about explaining/revealing specific practices of the Amish without going right out and saying it. Perfect! This book is very well written, in my opinion. The story grabbed my attention from the first chapter (which some books from other authors seem to take awhile!!) and kept me engaged through the very end!! I can't wait to read the next book! I felt like I was there in the small town with them all. The character development is great and the mystery/suspense of the story is right on! I even caught myself holding my breath at a couple points in the story. Up until the very end, it had me guessing! I never at all predicted the outcome, though I tried! There is a clean romance that slowly develops, making this book also fitting for teens.

The narrator, Meredith Mitchell, does a great job, and I hope she is also the narrator in the next book. She is awesome at switching between the voices during dialogue, so there is never any confusion as to who is speaking. I particularly love the voice she uses for Nick's son! Her voice takes on a calm and soothing tone for characters like Sarah and had me on the edge of my seat with others (which you will find out who when you listen to it yourself...I dont want to say because it may give away some of the plot). She had perfect pace, volume, and pronunciation. I plan to listen to more of her work!

I highly recommend this book by Marta Perry. I enjoyed it very much, and I am sure you will , too. If you are like me, you may be wondering if this is the book for you...yes! It is! I'm very happy with my purchase and I plan to get the next one in 3 days when my monthly credit arrives!

Thank you for reading my review!! :-)

Good series starter

This is a great start to the series and I look forward to the next one. I don’t understand the other ratings stating this book has poor narration! I thought Meredith Mitchell did an excellent job with the emotion, action and pacing of this book.

So so, but kept with it while driving

Characters seemed rather one dimensional, especially in light of the reading. No matter how dire the situation, Matt was pedantic, Nick’s vocal inflections did not vary much, and Allison seemed more ditsy than I’d imagine for a businesswoman. If her vocal range had varied beyond the pattern used by the reader, I may have liked her more and she may have seemed more realistic and less sing-songy . As the protagonist, she seemed quite dumb, and I found it difficult to like her. I think a better performer would have helped this.
