A marriage on the rocks, a missing friend, and a tangle of shocking lies converge at a peaceful North Carolina lakefront cottage in this irresistibly twisty new psychological thriller from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shanora Williams—perfect for fans of Liv Constantine, Tarryn Fisher, Kellye Garrett, and Caroline Kepnes.

Investigative reporter Rose Howard is exhausted from trying to manage her seemingly perfect life. With her marriage to the man she thought was her one true love collapsing, she desperately needs for one thing to go right.

While striving for a promotion to senior reporter, her efforts are interrupted when she learns her former best friend and travel vlogger, Eve Castillo, isn't responding to attempts to contact her at the North Carolina cottage she's reviewing. Rose knows Eve can be flaky and irresponsible. And after Eve breaks the ultimate ethical friendship code and crosses boundaries to the point of no return, Rose wants nothing to do with her. Still, Rose heads to the tranquil small town of Sage Hill …

Rose soon discovers that Eve has vanished without her purse and passport—even after booking a trip abroad. The personable cabin owners’ accounts of Eve's stay just don’t add up … and most of the town's initially hospitable inhabitants become increasingly less helpful …

Rose's instincts tell her the solution lies somewhere in Eve's—and Sage Hill's—past. To get answers, she’ll have to ask inconvenient questions, stumble onto shocking truths, and face vicious attempts on her life. But some truths are best left alone. And secrets Rose never saw coming could easily sink her, and her future, without a trace …

I listened to this book last weekend, and it was a quick listen. I was intrigued by the blurb, and I’m always down for a good thriller. This was also my first book by Williams, and I liked it!

The main character is Rose, who finds out that her friend Eve has gone missing from Eve’s sister. They pretty much grew up together and have always been close until a few months prior. Rose being the investigator she is, is determined to find out what happened to Eve. This sets off a visit to a mysterious lake town where everyone seems to be hiding something, and Rose comes away with very few answers.

Told mostly from Rose’s perspective, but sprinkled every so often with Eve’s online diary entries, I was hooked the whole book. Eve had such a tragic life that it was easy to be sympathetic to the way she lived and the things she did. I mostly felt sorry for her.

There were definitely some heart pounding moments and twists that I loved, but the ending turned out how I thought it would go. I was suspecting everyone at some point though! Overall, this was a solid thriller that will keep you entertained. I loved that I listened to it because the narrators did an amazing job.

Good Thriller

I have a friend I’m no longer close to, and people often ask me, “If something happened to her, would you wish things had turned out differently?” This story really made me sit with that question. It’s about living with the decisions you’ve made—even when they weren’t perfect—and giving yourself the grace to feel your feelings fully. It also explores what it means to accept others as they are, while learning to accept yourself in that same space.

It’s a layered story of sisterhood, betrayal, love, and forgiveness—one that gently asks, What would you do? I especially appreciated the way therapy was woven into the narrative because honestly, most of us are still healing from something. I also loved that the main character wasn’t portrayed as flawless. She was messy and growing and human—and even while navigating her own pain, she found clarity about who her friend truly was and met that truth with acceptance, not fantasy.

I really loved this book. I usually enjoy everything this author writes, and this one was no different. The story moved quickly, kept me guessing, and of course had that unexpected plot twist I’ve come to expect. But what stuck with me the most was the message at the end. Forgiving someone you love doesn’t always mean letting them back into your life. Sometimes it just means holding on to the good memories and finding peace, while living more freely.

Phenomenal story

That’s where I lived for this entire book… the edge of the cliff. I was so stressed out about Eve and then Rose because why are you out here in dangerous little towns by yourself. I loved it. This is the first book I’ve read by Shanora Williams and I’m hooked.
