I absolutely love the prose of Jack London. I wonder exactly how many people have died, pulled North to the Wild by the romantic pen of Jack London. I finished a while back (Dietz's version) and was crying as I listened to it with my kids.

I've recently become interested in listening to several classics by different readers. London was one of the first I've done this with, but it worked well so he won't be the last.

John Lee gives a very solid reading of this classic. I think this is probably the superior audio of White Fang. While I like Dietz (and haven't done anything but sampled Thomley), Lee's reading is straight forward and easily managed at hyper-audio speeds (2.5x or faster). The only downside of a narration by Lee, is it is sort of like watching a movie with Kevin Bacon. They guy is everywhere and it is weird to hear his voice in so many places.

Not just for my Kids or my Youth

This novel was interesting since I had just finished listening to Ian Mortimer's Time Travelers Guide historical series. In those books, Mortimer dedicates a few passages to describing how animals were regarded in medieval England, Elizabethan England and the Restoration. In short - not well.

While I was listening to this Jack London tale about the life of a wolf/dog, I kept thinking how extraordinary it is that a few centuries later such a book was written with such empathy toward an animal, let alone a wolf. Perhaps London was using the character of White Fang as a lens through which we see how human beings act toward one another and other animals; perhaps our cruelty and dominance of nature is futile, unless we accept that we are, in fact, a part of it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A beautifully written classic that shares the underlying thoughts and instincts that guide both man and beast. I quite often found myself talking to the wolf, cheering him on, and sighing with content as he finally found the love of his god/man. I only regret I waited so long to experience this beautiful tale!

A true classic!

Excellent narration by John Lee. As for the classic story, I found the first three parts of this book a bit sad and grim, but London does a thorough job creating the back story and characterization of White Fang. The last third of the book was quite a bit more heartwarming (parts 4 and 5). This book is similar to THE CALL OF THE WILD, but where Buck was born in domesticity, White Fang was born in the wild.

PART 1: (takes place before White Fang was born)
The story begins with Henry and Bill driving a dog pack across the Alaskan snow towards Fort McGurry, with a coffin strapped to the toboggan, in the midst of a famine. It doesn’t end well. Grim but realistic. In this first section, we meet a canny she-wolf with reddish fur (who will later give birth to White Fang). Her father was a wolf, but her mother was a dog, and she was born among a native tribe (see part 3).

PART2: Several wolves vie for the favor of the reddish she-wolf, but an old wolf named One Eye wins by killing his rivals. White Fang is born with gray fur and gray eyes, and he’s a canny survivor. The fiercest of the litter, his siblings die of starvation. White Fang learns to hunt from his mother. He deals with ptarmigan chicks, squirrels, hawks, lynx, and learns the law of meat.

PART 3: The cub and his she-wolf (half-dog) mother come upon the Mackenzie River Indians. They knew his mother back when she was their dog. They call her Kiche, and welcome her back amongst them. Grey Beaver names the cub White Fang. He lives with them for five years, learning to fear fire, learning to resent the bigger bully dog Lip-lip, and gradually losing contact with his mother, she wolf Kiche. Lip-lip robs White Fang of his playful puppyhood. When he’s disobedient, Gray Beaver beats him savagely into submission. There is no kindness. The dogs gang up on him, lead by Lip-lip. Throughout, White Fang becomes more alone, morose, and solitary, yet more wicked and cunning. The code he learned was to obey the strong and to oppress the weak. Other dogs and humans grew to fear and hate him. White Fang served Grey Beaver, but he didn’t love his god. When famine strikes again and the tribe has no food, he retreats to live in the wild for a time.

PART 4: When famine ends, White Fang rejoins the tribe and becomes lead sled-dog under the native Mit-sah. But he is still hated, attacked, persecuted by the other sled dogs. When White Fang is about five years old, Grey Beaver takes him to Fort Yukon. He meets his first white man. He fights tame white dogs, which greatly pleases a venal white man dubbed Beauty Smith. The ugly, filthy, cowardly little man covets White Fang, and gains possession through alcoholism. Beauty beats White Fang with whip and club, gloating in the fun, enjoying the task, cruel in the way of cowards.

“White Fang remained on the Yukon, the property of a man more than half mad, and all brute. Under the treatment of his mad god, White Fang became a fiend....Beauty Smith drove him wild with petty torments.” Deliberately, Beauty drove him mad and then employed him in illegal dog fights.

In the Klondike, Beauty pits him against a killer bull dog named Cherokee. Half-dead, WF is rescued by Weedon Scott, a well-connected mining expert, and his sled-musher, Matt. White Fang learns to trust and eventually love Weedon Scott. Happy times.

PART 5: White Fang goes to live at a ranch in the Santa Clara valley of California, with Weedon Scott. He figures out the new rules and learns to protect his master’s family (wife, kids, his father a judge, etc.) Happy times. Happy ending.

Final third is heartwarming (spoilers)

A classic story depicting one wolfdog's life in the Yukon during the gold rush years of the 1890's. From a young pup nearly dying of starvation, to being an outsider among dogs, to brutal handling and nearly death as a fight dog, to finally coming into the hands of one man who showed White Fang that though he has had a rough life both as a wild wolfdog and in the captivity of man, that life doesn't have to always be such a struggle to survive. White Fang finds a home.
This story is told from the viewpoint of the wolf and how he finds the will to survive countless trials. Shows just how cruel men can be towards dogs. In the end, you get the feels when you see him finally finding a home that he is safe and learns to trust and love his new "family".
The performance of the narrator, John Lee, was very enjoyable and well spoken.
Overall I enjoyed listening to the story which I had read in my early teens. A very thought-provoking story of man's relationship to animals.

Would you consider the audio edition of White Fang to be better than the print version?

In some ways. You can listen to an audio while working, driving etc and can't read during those times.

What other book might you compare White Fang to and why?

I suppose the other one I just listened to which was by Jack London, CALL OF THE WILD and they were both great, about animal, but opposite. One goes from wild to tame and the other goes from tame to wild.

What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The different character voices.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me both cry and laugh, I think my fellow workers, wonder what I am listening to many times.
