About this listen
The most important question you’ll ever ask yourself.
In Why Bother?, personal growth expert Jennifer Louden challenges you to open your mind, heart, and life by following where the question leads. Through reflection and stories from others, Louden demonstrates how to bother when it feels impossible or like too much work, whether after professional defeats, heartbreak, illness, or life-changing loss.
She shows why you must prioritize what’s calling you at any time of your life, especially when you’ve sidelined your dreams to raise kids, pay the rent, or take care of aging parents. And crucially, she shows you how tapping into your deepest desires can give you the energy to move forward - even when the world seems in such dire straits.
It’s time to reclaim the dignity and beauty of your desires. It’s time to get your bother on.

When we feel alone, cut off, or trapped, we can let those difficulties steer us onto a path toward an authentic, flourishing life—living in a way that allows us to find the wholeness that lies within. Even when we’re alone, a sense of community can accompany us through the stormy times. Our words, hearts, and actions can line up with a larger vision, rather than the smaller views our anxious, fearful thoughts arouse in us. To live in a less constricted way—Salzberg says we need to get real about what’s most important.

If you’re struggling to stay on top of your to-do list, you probably have a good reason: anxiety, fatigue, depression, ADHD, or lack of support. For therapist KC Davis, the birth of her second child triggered a stress-mess cycle. The more behind she felt, the less motivated she was to start. She didn’t fold a single piece of laundry for seven months. One life-changing realization restored her sanity—and the functionality of her home: You don’t work for your home; your home works for you.

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

Coming Back to Life
Jennifer Louden adds this work to a long body of texts built to support women folks especially, but anyone willing to be exercised by Feminine Wisdom, with re-orienting our thoughts around a foundation of “bother,” which I interpreted as a way of materializing an energy of caring, into the kind of trekking poles favored by active walkers who could offload some of the balance function to equipment, and enjoy a longer journey in the process. It’s worth having a hard copy and an Audible version read by the author, because the texts hits different across each medium. I recommend Why Bother for anyone who wants to do something differently with their life force energy.

Jennifer is truly a gift to the world.
I could not leave and not let you know Jennifer how much you touched my mind but especially my heart. I felt every thing you talked about. I don't even know how many times I have told myself why bother. Well now when I say that to myself I'll get curious and figure out why. You have touched me in a way that I will take action so I can have every wonderful dream I have held only in my head with the ongoing follow up of why bother. You are not only a gift to me but to the world. Oprah should take this book and see who you really are!!! I hope to see and meet you at a retreat soon. May God bless you. Lora Terry
