About this listen

Through 23 connected short stories, the author looks into the lives of the inhabitants of a small town in the American heartland. In a simple and intense style, these psychological portraits of the sensitive and imaginative of Winesburg's population are seen through the eyes of a young reporter-narrator, George Willard. Their stories are about loneliness and alienation, passion and virginity, wealth and poverty, thrift and profligacy, carelessness and abandon.

With Winesburg, Ohio, Sherwood Anderson charted a new direction in American fiction, evoking with lyrical simplicity quiet moments of epiphany in the lives of ordinary men and women.

"When he calls himself a 'poor scribbler' don't believe him. He is not a poor scribbler...he is a very great writer." (Ernest Hemingway)

landmark book, mediocre readers

Agree with reviewer below who lambastes the narrators. Especially bad is the male voice doing the introduction and several subsequent sections. He doesn't know if he's Irish or South Carolinian or from Down East Maine, forget about Ohio. A mishmash of summer stock readers overall. This book deserves better.

Hated it

I hated it. It basically is trashing people in the middle of the country. And I love classics usually.

The first few stories are great

but becomes stranger and oddly less interesting towards the end of the book. I guess even though the writing was fine I just cared less about the characters.

Do not buy this audiobook

The narration of this book is wretched. Just listening to the voices of the narrators makes me sick. It is truly horrible to listen to, whether or not you're trying to study the book.
