Publisher's summary

The seaside town of Fethering, home to Carole Seddon and her friend Jude, is a place rife with foul play, as evidenced in this sixth mystery in the series.

Carole is thrilled with the coming wedding of her once-estranged son, Stephen. She finds it odd, though, that the parents of the bride have no interest in arranging the wedding, and seem terrified at the prospect of publicizing it. Things turn deadly intriguing when the father of the bride disappears at the engagement party, only to be found brutally murdered the following morn. Now, Carole elicits Jude's help in sifting through the guest list, including Gaby's nefarious brother and her uncle, a justice of the peace, before the festivities become completely funereal.

My favorite Simon Brett so far

I am really enjoying the growing character development of Simon Brett’s mysteries. The story itself, perhaps predictable, was still completely satisfying. Geoffrey Howard’s narration superb!

Another good one!

It's a great story and the narrator was excellent. I have one criticism - there are not enough chapter points. I believe there is one for every five chapters of the book. I can understand this because the actual chapters are short, but since I like to listen to these rather light murder mysteries at night and often fall asleep listening, it is very hard to get back to the last thing I heard.

Fortunately the ones narrated by the author have a break at the end of each book chapter which makes it much easier to get back to where I was listening when I fell asleep. Both he and Geoffrey Howard do a fine job of narrating.

I don't know if this would matter to anyone else, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case it does.

Short and Sweet

Shorter than usual but good. A couple of errors like “inflammatory” instead of “flammable” and when Carol thinks “double murderer” instead of “triple murderer.” Proof reader asleep? New to this author and will listen again!

Strange Happenings

We've all got some skeletons in the closet, and the same is true of Gaby Martin, fiancé to Stephen Seddon. The night of their engagement party, Gaby's mother, Marie has to be taken back to the hotel after she begins to feel ill. Carole, Stephen's mother drives her back, to escape spending more time with her ex (David) Stephen's father. But the next morning, she learns that Gaby's father, Howard Martin never made it back. When a body is found and it turns out to be that of Howard Martin, the hunt is on for his killer. Gaby is strangely protective of her mother and the past seems to hold a lot of mysteries. When Gaby's apartment is broken in to, Carole and Jude decide to look into who is stalking Gaby and who may have killed Howard Martin. This is a GREAT series, full of quirky, yet fun folks and odd situations that make for the best stories. The actual killer was a mystery to me up until the end.

Cheerful Mystery

The women are at it again solving another murder that lands on their doorstep. Brett continues to develop the two main characters and the minor characters around them. Credible plotting. It’s fun. It’s suspenseful watching Brett weave the story.

Absolutely enjoyable

I love these books
We’ll written
Wonderful narration
Good plot
Most of all the main characters are not stupid. Though they do seem to overlook some things that to the reader is obvious, they do not try to confront the murderer before telling the police, which I find annoying in other books I have read. Actually so far they don’t seem to catch the murderer till the murderer catches one of them.

Enjoyed this one!

I am listening to this series in order. The plot was engaging, and I was surprised as to who the perp was. All around enjoyable listen. As in the other books, the language was not objectionable, and there were no sexual situations. Mr. Howard seems to have rid himself of his annoying habit of saying "ah" ......before he starts a sentence, and that is a plus. I WILL be downloading the next book in the series.

Fun stories!

I enjoy all of these stories, and the narrator is wonderful! The main two characters are like Nancy Drew and her friend, all grown up
