About this listen

It's mid-May in the tiny northwoods Wisconsin town of Loon Lake, and the fish are biting. But walleye isn’t the only thing on the hook.

There are rumors that a precious vein of nickel and copper is buried on the property of wealthy Grace McDonough, and the drilling is about to begin. But not if environmentalist Pete Ferris can help it. When Grace's 24-year-old son, Noah, is caught in a sordid sex crime, police chief Lew Ferris makes the arrest. But a day later, Lew is stricken when her brother, Pete, turns up dead, a bloody pry bar found in the woods nearby. Then, Grace's body is discovered in a car at the bottom of a river — and Noah has vanished.

Lew puts out a statewide APB, but before long, Noah is also found murdered on the McDonough property. It's beginning to look like mother and son were killed by the same person. And when Lew learns that her brother had planned to file a lawsuit to prevent drilling for the sulfide mine, a key piece of the puzzle suddenly falls into place. Lew is beginning to close in on the truth. But has the killer set his bait again, angling for his biggest catch yet?

different than usual

thriller, northern Wisconsin, rural, greed, murder, murder-investigation, law-enforcement, lawyers, small-town, support-system, suspense, friendship, family, family-dynamics, family-drama, wealthy, attitude-of-entitlement, forensics, cooperation, fishing****

This the first book in as a spin-off of a previous series (I had not read them) but I bought the audio because I had received a free e-book copy of book two from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley and LOVED it. AND all the fly fishing tips!
This one is almost a stand-alone because the author does bring in continuing important characters in a way that does not leave the reader wondering who/what. The plot and the characters are intriguing and fast moving. Kept me reading too late!
Whitney Dykhouse narrator must be great doing bodice rippers.

Love the series

Have read all her books - This says book 1 of the series but it is actually the same series and characters. Love the series. The only reason I can see it being book 1 is she's running for Sheriff.

Spending time with old friends

I was a huge fan of Victoria Houston's Loon Lake series on audible. That has not changed with the start of the Lew Ferris series. The characters are so real and endearing that when my daughter asked how I enjoyed the book, I told her that it was like spending time with old friends.

I would describe the book as feel good, without being sappy. I anxiously await the next installment.

I love the loon lake series.

loved the story, as I do all loon lake tales. I was not in love with the narrator.

Excellent As Always!

I've been a fan of the authors writing for some time. She makes you feel like your part of the Loon Lake community. The characters are well developed, the story is easy to follow, and it keeps you engaged until the end. I'm looking forward to more stories centering on Chief Ferris and Doc Osborn.

Love the new series

The narrator says some of the characters names wrong. She has the characters way of talking wrong. Why do I say this? Because I listened to the Loon Lake Series for years until they pulled them from audible. Why? I still don’t know. I have the books at home haven’t had time to read them. I wish they were all back here. Loved the series!!! And the characters!!

This one falls flat.

The story was predictable and I didn’t enjoy the narrator’s voice and inflection. Disappointing, for sure!

Horrible

So predictable. Had a hard time finishing even with it being a shorter story. Narrator was bad but writing was even worse. Such lame conversations. Do not recommend.

Book Hollow

This book is awful. The narration is atrocious, the plot is thin and predictable, and the writing is even worse. It reads as if it was written by a middle school student... with poorly crafted sentences and cheesy dialogue. The whole thing is cringeworthy.
