Publisher's summary

Yoga for Bendy People was written for yoga teachers and practitioners who want a deeper understanding of hypermobility syndromes and how to optimize the benefits of yoga for people who have them. A well-designed yoga practice not only avoids injury, but leaves the body better supported, the nervous system better regulated, the mind clearer, and the heart more connected to its purpose.

Author Libby Hinsley is a long-time yoga teacher, teacher trainer, and physical therapist. As a person living with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she is passionate about raising awareness about hypermobility in the yoga community and beyond. She has experienced the chronic pain, joint instability, and yoga-related injuries so common among bendy practitioners. In this book, she offers guidance on how to develop a sustainable yoga practice tailored to the unique needs of bendy practitioners—body, mind, and spirit.

Listeners will:

  • Learn about the latest hypermobility research and most common syndromes.
  • Discover how to avoid the common injuries bendy people face in yoga practice.
  • Understand how asana, pranayama, and meditation can support bendy people.

Excellent book for yoga teachers and students

This book is filled with up to date research, information as well as personal and clinical experience dealing with the challenges that hyper mobile joints bring to people in yoga but also in regard to fitness and exercise in general. I’m a personal trainer and yoga teacher, and I have both a BS and MS in exercise science and I feel I learned new things and really built on my knowledge and understanding on how to work with people with potential hyper mobility issues/disorders. I have a few training clients who exhibit some of the symptoms and regardless of whether they have a hyper mobile condition or not, I feel I can better train them and have adapted some of the programming for them to focus on improving sensory awareness and proprioception. The research on how many interrelated conditions and how they affect people who are “bendy” is so well presented and put together. I will certainly be looking into some more books/information on some things she mentioned here.

Additionally, even for someone just interested in exploring what yoga is truly about regardless of ability to do extreme yoga postures, this can be extremely uplifting for you too. Libby really gets to the heart of what yoga is about in this book while connecting with the research in movement science and biomechanics.

Such a fantastic book, I listened and bought a hard copy to highlight/take notes in and explore further topics.
