About this listen
Recovery from active addiction is a lifelong journey that can take many paths. By aligning yoga philosophy and poses with each of the 12 steps, Kyczy Hawk presents a physical and spiritual guide that complements and augments any 12-step practice. Listeners will investigate how they think, feel, and believe by using a new vocabulary to process traditional recovery principles.
- Current findings increasingly support yoga and mindfulness as promising complementary therapies for addictive behaviors (Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2013).
- Provides clear and concise instructions requiring no prior knowledge and enabling people to experience the benefits of this ancient practice in the comfort and privacy of their own home
- Key yoga terms are explained clearly.
- Consistent practice will lead to a more positive outlook on life and help eliminate harmful attitudes and behaviors. It can also create a balanced lifestyle, bringing greater harmony, stability, and enjoyment.
- Anyone can benefit from yoga, regardless of ability, age, belief system, or life circumstance.
Kyczy Hawk is a certified yoga instructor. She lectures on yoga and recovery throughout the Bay Area and has been a presenter at the Art of Yoga Project and Niroga Institute's Yoga Therapy teacher training. As the Success Over Addiction and Relapse (SOAR) yoga teacher specialty-training founder, she has taught yoga instruction workshops throughout the United States. She hosts a weekly yoga recovery meeting on In The Rooms and manages the Willow Glen Yoga Studio in San Jose, CA.

Story
The audiobook explores Ayurveda's understanding of both the problem of our 'one addiction process' and its solution. It offers holistic techniques that enhance any of the traditional recovery pathways and beyond any of the common diet/exercise dogma from mainstream media. It covers the stress/addictive tendencies of the doshic types, and links this to how stress affects metabolism, the main determinant of health. The programme offered in the audiobook is an integration of the philosophy, psychology and physical practises of Yoga and Ayurveda to help people shift their life trajectory.

Step 1: You admit that you're powerless over your addiction. Now what? Twelve-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) have helped countless people on the path to recovery. But many still feel that 12-step programs aren't for them: that the spiritual emphasis is too narrow, the modality too old-school, the setting too triggering, or the space too exclusive. Some struggle with an addict label that can eclipse the histories, traumas, and experiences that feed into addiction, or dismisses the effects of adverse experiences like trauma in the first place.

Story
Millions of Americans know yoga as a superb form of exercise and as a potent source of calm in the midst of our stress-filled lives. Far fewer are aware of the full promise of yoga as "the way of the fully alive human being" - a 4,000-year-old practical path of liberation that fits the needs of modern Western seekers with startling precision. Now Stephen Cope, a Western-trained psychotherapist who has lived and taught for more than 10 years at the largest yoga center in America, offers this marvelously lively and irreverent "pilgrim's progress" for today's world.

Story
Many people associate spiritual activities with religion, but sometimes performing spiritual activities is a self-help practice to help a person improve their mental and emotional health. In a nonreligious concept, spirituality emphasizes well-being. This can include holistic activities such as meditation or yoga. Spirituality seeks a connection with something greater than yourself, which can lead to positive emotions such as peace, wonder, contentment, gratitude, and acceptance. If you are eager to get in touch with your soul, carrying out spiritual activities can be of great help.

Story
Many of us live and operate from a mind-set of lack, scarcity, and limitation. We focus on what we don’t have - financial security, confidence, an intimate relationship - which keeps us feeling insecure and inadequate. We think “if only I could have those things, I could be happy”. But measuring wealth by money or material possessions leaves us feeling drained and spiritually empty. Constantly striving for more often means our ego is driving our thoughts, actions, and reactions, which prevents us from reaching something greater.

Our bodies function on energy. In essence, our bodies are energy. Because of this, we as humans are very sensitive to the things that happen around us, and everyday things - such as technology, our thoughts, and our routine - influence how we feel. There are points within the body where this energy is concentrated, and these are known as chakras.

The bestselling author explains why self-acceptance is counterculture, how virtues can turn into dangerous vices, and why healing is a nonlinear process that leads to gentleness. The most liberating message might be, “We don't need to focus on ‘fixing’ ourselves. As we focus on living from our heart center, anything that’s not in alignment with that light will fall away.”

Very good. The author has clearly done her work in recovery - yoga practice and study and this 12 step walk through is a great share in both areas! The reading is a bit monotone but easily overcome by the content.
