About this listen

What do you do when a sociopath loves you? Rising star FBI profiler Laurel Snow is about to find out in New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti's edgy new romantic thriller . . .

Calling Laurel Snow's relationship with her newly discovered half-sister challenging is an understatement. Not only does Laurel suspect Abigail is behind the mysterious disappearance of their father, but her erratic behavior also makes life in Laurel's small hometown interesting, to say the least. Still, when Abigail claims someone is now out to kill her, Laurel's instinct to protect her sister goes into overdrive. Then things get even more dicey as dead bodies start turning up in the icy waters of the Sauk River and there's only one connection among them: Abigail . . .

Having Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers bringing in those bodies with his dive team only complicates matters. Huck is as impulsive and fiery as Laurel is coolly analytical, which makes their alliance risky at best. But standing up to such a demonically brilliant killer is going to take all the help Laurel can get. Because Laurel's attempt to save her troubled sister's life might cost her own . . .

You Can't Pick Your Family

Not many authors are confident or competent enough to do what Ms. Zanetti has done with this series. It's not unusual for a romantic thriller to feature a damaged hero, or occasionally a heroine with serious issues. But the Laurel Snow thrillers revolve around two fascinating characters who could be considered damaged, and of course, they're attracted to each other. Laurel Snow intrigues me with her utter brilliance and unusual mind. She's also interesting because she's so socially stilted and has difficulty displaying emotion.

Then there's Huck Rivers. He's a completely different sort of beast. A former soldier suffering from severe PTSD, he's now working for Fish and Wildlife. He's fierce and fiery, preferring a solitary life with just his dog. He knows he's not a "good bet" as he puts it, but he and Laurel are attracted with a strength that surprises both of them.

Let's add Laurel's sister to this mix. She's a narcissistic sociopath... just what you want in the family tree. She's also as brilliant and unusual as Laurel. She just doesn't have an ounce of empathy in her body. As Laurel and Huck search for a horrific killer, Laurel's sister just seems to be at the periphery of it all and demanding more attention from Laurel. She's seriously a loose cannon and suspicious. But then, there's a veritable sea of red herrings in this fast-paced story.

The characters in this series bring an extra edge to what is already a thrilling read. This novel is near perfection for fans of romantic suspense and can be read as a stand-alone if you haven't already enjoyed the first book in the series. The only downside for me was the narration of the audiobook. I didn't care for some of the character voicing or the pacing that was used at times. But it didn't stop my enjoyment of the story. Be aware that while the case is resolved, there is a bit of a cliffhanger that will have you feverishly awaiting book three.

Another great Laurel Snow read!

This is the second book in the series that follows FBI Special Agent Laurel Snow and her team as they solve the latest in a string of murders that appears to be another serial killer. This one strikes close to home as it appears her socially challenged half-sister may be a target. The good: Really like how Laurel Snow's character is developing and her growing team of staff and supporting agents. The not so good: Would really like to see a more romantic storyline develop with her and Huck Rivers, but this is more of a Mystery/ Suspense so I guess we must be patient with the Romantic trickle... and her sister is nuts!! Not sure if its entertaining or distracting, TBD. Listened to this in audio and a very good read!

Reminds me a little of the show Bones

Super logical/smart lead protagonist that really doesn’t fit in with people and yet somehow still profiles them, meets hot man and works together. Seems familiar.

5 Stars!!

FBI Special Agent Laurel Snow is back!! SA Laurel Snow is one of the most original characters I’ve ever read in the mystery/thriller/romantic/suspense genre. She has a unique look and is off the charts smart…..she’s brilliant actually. I love Cpt. Huck Rivers, he has his own demons and issues, he & Laurel have a complicated and undefined relationship, looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes.

I have to say Agent Snow’s half-sister, Dr. Abigail Caine, really takes this series to a whole new “holy crap she’s a psycho” level….she is beyond creepy. Yikes!

I cannot wait to read more! This book is fast paced and will keep you on the edge of your seat guessing who the killer is almost till the end!! That ending….WOW! Can’t wait for the next book. If you’re a fan of romantic/suspense mixed with plenty of mystery you will not be disappointed! Can’t wait for the next book!!

Story is fantastic but narration is awful.

The story is very suspenseful, and always keeps you guessing, but the narrators different voices are just absolutely awful. Sometimes it’s hard to listen!

My new favorite series!!

What a great read! It's a thriller/suspense that looks like it will be a continued series. The case is solved, but the relations of the main characters are not.

The heroine is my absolute favorite. She was fascinating and I loved how she reacted to a lot of the situations in this, especially her reactions to the hero. She's a child prodigy that has become an FBI agent profiler. You could say her personality is unique. Some would say she was strange but what makes her strange in others eyes is that she doesn't let her emotions dictate her reactions. She thinks very logically and sees more into people's words instead of taking personal insult. She's also very upfront with people, no game playing or hinting. She was just a refreshing character to read about.

The hero is a bit harder to connect too. He's big, gruff and closed off. He really doesn't want to be around people to the point of being rude, and yet he is basically a hero. His work is saving people and you can tell he truly cares, he just wants to be left alone. He is also upfront with people but like I sad in more of a rude way. I can already see that the heroine is softening him just because she reacts so differently to people than others. I think that's going to make him open up more.

I think that because of the way the hero/heroine are, the romance in this series is going to be more of a slow burn. Now usually I want more with a couple, but the suspenseful plot was pretty exciting to read on its own that any romance we got felt like a bonus. There is also some pretty interesting side characters that I'm really looking forward to what's going to come next. Great read!!
