    Main Idea: 1 John reads much like an encouraging speech or an uplifting sermon. It is filled with inspiration and reassurance about the core truths of the Gospel, which underscore the message of the cross. Embracing love over hate and focusing on the Gospel over worldly messages were critical themes for the first century as well as for Christians today. Division and polarization are rampant in our society. It is easy to become discouraged. 1 John serves as an assurance to believers so they may know that they have eternal life with Jesus Christ.
