The stages of menopause are: Perimenopause: The transition period that begins when the ovaries start to produce less estrogen and ends when menopause is reached. It can last from a few months to 10 years, with an average of four years. Menopause: The point when you have gone 12 consecutive months without a period. At this stage, the ovaries have stopped releasing eggs and producing most of their estrogen. Postmenopause: The phase that begins after menopause and lasts for the rest of your life. During this stage, the low levels of estrogen increase the risk of certain health conditions, but you may also experience benefits.
