In this Conversation About Power, I'm going to be sharing what I learned during my recent trip to Phoenix in Arizona.

I went there for the Business By Design (BBD) Live event on December 5th, 6th, and 7th—and let me tell you, it was quite the journey. I’m talking a nine-hour flight to Atlanta, another four hours to Phoenix, and oh, a cold that decided to tag along for the ride. So, bear with me if I sound a bit scratchy!

But honestly, this trip was such a mix of breakthroughs, nostalgia, and cultural quirks that I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

In this Conversation About Power, I'm talking about change.

This has been spurred on by the fact that this week I'm going to the States for the first time in 30 years. I lived in Texas in 1993-1994, and found a lot that I loved there (and some things I really didn’t like at all).

Returning so many years later has made me think about what will have inevitably changed and about change in general. It’s also reminded me that we deal with change in different ways.

Just this week, I suddenly realized there's a parallel you can draw between the Downton Abbey series and AI. We can learn a lot from this series about change back then that can help us deal with the changes we are facing now.

In this Conversation About Power, I'm talking about power imbalances, in the light of what I've seen happening in Amsterdam over the last week.

On the 7th of November, a football match took place in Amsterdam between Ajax (the local team) and Maccabi Tel Aviv. There were scuffles and problems before the match, including a Palestinian flag being removed. The match itself was quiet, but afterwards problems broke out between locals and the Israeli fans. Fans on both sides experienced violence and hate speech and random people on the street were asked to prove they weren’t Jewish.

It’s particularly the political reactions after the match that have caused me to record this episode.

Now this episode might not win me any friends, but I've thought a lot about this subject, and I'm sharing my thoughts about this with you. I also suggest what we can learn from it as people and as business owners. What choices do we have if we feel like we're not being listened to? If we feel like we’re being silenced?

Today’s Conversation About Power is a meeting of two language-nerd minds.

I'm talking to Kasia Krasucka, who started off as a language teacher and has since moved into coaching.

Now, she did this for very much the same reasons as I did. It's because we both realized that sometimes people find it hard to do what they really want to do. And that there can be all kinds of things holding you back. So, we have both spent yaers working out how to help people get past this.

She’s made this change in her way. I've done it in mine. As a result, we do a lot of nerding around on this episode about 1. Why it is that people can find things so hard to change? 2 What you can do about this?

Kasia also talks about power leaks. If you've ever experienced feeling great one moment and just a minute later, not daring to do something anymore, that's because you've leaked some of your power somewhere.
