    Providence, Rhode Island, is the capital and the largest city in the state, known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and unique mix of old-world charm and modern urban development. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded in 1636, Providence was a refuge for those seeking religious freedom, which has laid the foundation for the city’s commitment to diversity and tolerance. The city is also home to some of the most prestigious universities in the United States, including Brown University, an Ivy League school, and the Rhode Island School of Design. With so many college students, you would expect Providence to also have a thriving nightlife, which can be found downtown where a variety of bars, clubs, and live music venues wait to welcome students who want to socialize and let loose in the evenings and on weekends. For such a large and busy city, you would also expect that Providence has its share of crime, and while the city does have some issues with violent crime, property crimes such as burglary and motor vehicle theft are far more common. But what happens when a basic carjacking turns violent for seemingly no reason whatsoever? In June of 2000, 20-year-old Jason Burgeson and 21-year-old Amy Shute found themselves in the crosshairs of five nefarious men who were prowling the streets of Providence, looking to get into trouble. Jason and Amy were spotted by a Providence police officer around 2:15 AM on June 9th; the couple was chatting in the parking lot of Tommy’s Bar and Grille in downtown Providence. Less than 12 hours later, their bodies were found slumped against hay bales at the Button Hole Golf course, located on the boarder of Providence and Johnstown, Rhode Island. They had been murdered in cold blood, and it was up to the investigators to figure out what had happened to them and why.

    In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 29th, 2022, Boston Police officer John O’Keefe was found dead in a snowbank outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts. According to the medical examiner, O’Keefe had died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia. At first it seemed like a tragic accident, maybe a slip on the ice, a fall that ended in death. But as investigators dug deeper, things became far more complicated and Karen Read, O’Keefe’s girlfriend, became the center of the investigation. Evidence that there had been trouble in paradise in the romantic relationship began to surface, but so did other disturbing possibilities. What seemed like a domestic tragedy was quickly clouded by allegations of police corruption and cover-up, and an investigation that many believe was compromised from the start. What if the very people tasked with upholding the law were covering up the truth? Was John O’Keefe’s death a result of an angry lovers rage- or the collateral damage of a police force protecting its own? In this case, the line between justice and corruption becomes confusingly blurred. Evidence disappears, witnesses are silenced, and as the truth slowly rises to the surface, it may reveal a web of lies that’s more dangerous than anyone could have predicted. Was Karen Read the scapegoat in a larger cover-up? And what role did corruption within the police department play in distorting facts. my favorite podcast

I absolutely adore Stephanie and have come to like Derrick as well. I love the deep deep dives, as i'm someone who WANTS all the insignificant details. Stephanie is INCREDIBLE with her research and I enjoy the police insight from Derrick. This is my comfort podcast.

I absolutely love this podcast and honestly wish they made more recordings but I know they're super busy. the amount of information that goes into each episode is incredible and I love the conversations that Derrick and Stephanie engage in. theyre both very good at keeping everything neutral and unbias and basing theyre episodes on facts!

and the theme music gives me total spy vibes and I love it!

Great show!

I love every episode! I started watching Stephanie's videos about 3 months ago and figured out this podcast existed, I wasn't sure I'd like it at first but I LOVE it! You guys do a great job and go so in depth. I love the back and forth discussion you have and when Derrick plays devils advocate. I have burned through the entire library of shows in the last 6 shifts at work, though, so now I have to wait each week like a peasant for new episodes. Keep up the great work guys! #day1er

Stellarly researched deep dives with the receipts!

I love listening to these two get deep into the facts and work to suss out the larger implications. The timelines and details are meticulously laid out. They balance each other well-- sometimes agreeing to disagree but always leaving the listener with something to think about. It is refreshing how much time they are willing to spend with a case to really cover all of the facets. I highly recommend the podcast!
